New Smashing Pumpkins Video - "SuperChrist"

We'll spare you a little confusion over this video up front: No, those hirsute has-beens playing bass and tambourine aren't in the Smashing Pumpkins. For that matter, "SuperChrist" isn't even a song that appears on Zeitgeist. But this clip is making us wish both of those statements were true. "SuperChrist" is a Pumpkins tune that never made it to Billy and Jimmy's last LP, instead seeing release on a CD "featuring bands staffed by employees of Guitar Center." The Pumpkins chose the acts for the album, which according to Billboard will be available at Guitar Center outlets March 1st (ask a hirsute has-been staffer for it by name). Of the track's delayed release, Billy says the band "didn't ... under[stand] the song and thought playing it on tour would help us sort it out" because of its "psychedelic" properties, which makes sense but also is sad because if "SuperChrist"'s spare, heavy riffing sat alongside the more classic Pumpkins excellence of "That's The Way (My Love Is)" maybe we would've been nicer about the album. (Probably not. But point is, we like it.)

Zeitgeist is out via Reprise.

Can you imagine if the entirety of Zeitgeist was so heavy and weird? That little orchestral break in the middle of the song is beautiful. Wish it had all been like this. Excellent.

That is the first Pumpkins song I've liked since Mellon Collie.

The music itself is slick, polished and Rock & Fuckin’ Roll. The video’s raw, unpolished, bizarre, rough, and home-made-feel gives it a profoundly “New Pumpkins” atmosphere. This is the extremely exciting and in my opinion, a gem.

I think this song was the opener to their shows on this last tour. Terrible, terrible show.

I like the song, the beginning sounds like "United States" from Zeitgeist....but I miss the other members of the band(Ginger, Jeff, Lisa) in the vid.

Billy must have heard the new Black Mountain album and thought, "if I make it just a little more accessible" it it will rock or sound like the Pumpkins circa 1996." Either way this song is pretty good.

It's like a mix between old Silverfuck (old Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins) and United States (new Pumpkins) but it works, excellent drumming!

not being a fan of psychedelia at all, it would be my opinion that Superchrist blows. Real hard.

Give me That's The Way anyday.

The only thing thats rubbish about this song or any song since their 2 huge albums are the people who want nothing but replicas of them. Shi**y fans.

Vince, I think you're right. I'm pretty sure this was the song they opened with on the last tour. It was in Vancouver, anyway (yes, at the show where the guy died). I thought it was a good show, but only when they didn't play stuff from Zeitgeist.

Oh, and the hairy guy on bass is not a Guitar Center employee, unless the legendary Sky Saxon from the Seeds has started working at Guitar Centre.

Wow! One of my favourite songs has one of the worst videos I've ever seen. This video was a fucking mess! I've been a diehard Pumpkin's fan for over 13yrs now and have nver seen them suck so badly on video quality. I thought the video to Tarantula was aweful. HAH! This totally beat it. Who wants to look at that lamb guy the whole time AND I so prefer the live version to that one. How disappointing! DAMMIT!

So those statements aren't true, and the hirsute has-beens aren't actually in the Smashing Pumpkins? Why would you open a post with two untrue statements - which, by the way, are actually true?

Weird.

Sky Saxon's wife to Stereogum: "Just because someone has gray or white hair and is older than some of you out there does not mean they are 'has-beens'". Zing!

Awesome song. Reminds me of why I loved the pumpkins so much between 1996 & 2000.

They played this at the Utah show and it rocked. It was amazing to me how tight Billy and Jeff were. This is an incredibly technical song guitar-wise and they kicked ass. I'm excited to hear a studio version of it.

OK, I agree in the sentiment that this is FUCKING AMAZING! I love it! Where was the stuff like this on the crappy Zeitgeist? Come on Billy. If you have riffs like this sitting in your noggin' then get them out on onto tape.

I like the Boris comment too. lol

ahh thank you for the live-sounding drums. with a drummer as good as jimmy, there's no need for the slick, pro-tool-ized sound of "modern rock". how much better does this production sound than the album? a lot.

i'm a huge pumpkins fan, love every album, but this blows

it's just billy hitting an e string for like 6 mins

14 year olds write better songs (even using just an e string)
