New Strokes Video - "You Only Live Once"

In which we see the retro cool of the Strokes as the logical extension of centuries of physical and spiritual (hey, meditating lady) evolution. Seems like this record came out like four years ago, right? "Juicebox" leaked and set an underwhelming first impression of First Impressions in late '05, so in blog years it was ages ago -- but when a Lucasfilm art director (Warren Fu) says he's "determined" and inspired, why not take him up on his intergalactic cinema chops. The vid is composed "entirely of CGI ... [paying] homage to Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey as well as the NASA spacecrafts of the 1970's." After a cool use of the abrupt outro cut from Impressions track "Ize Of The World," Fu's film unfolds, giving a futuristic spin on possibly the best Strokes song to date (i.e. 1977 A.D.). Watch it at Imeem.

First off Gum needs to turn off the autoplay on this...I really like the homages to '2001' (this and the end has no end) since Kubrick was the man and not many people notice this. Pretty good stuff considering its probably the best song on their pretty lame third album...

I never understood why everyone in the media treats the Strokes like they invented modern rock music. One day last year, I read through three separate reviews of the Cold War Kids first album “Robbers and Cowards” and every one of them compared the Cold War Kids to the Strokes n a derogatory way. Now frankly, I don’t even see the comparison, and I would argue that the Strokes are given far too much credit for detuned guitars of the Cold War Kids, just lazy attempts at the blued-eyed soul of Spoon, or the bluesy riffing that the White Stripes do so well. So if you love the Strokes, that’s cool, but don’t buy into the media’s perception of their importance in the rock pantheon – it’s just a load of bullshit.

"Ize Of The World" sounded giant at the beginning! See that's the problem with the third album... the arrangements of the songs and the overall sound kinda killed the album which is otherwise filled with good tunes.

Cool video btw. The new website is great too, check it out.

I always thought Impressions was brilliant. I never understood the backlash.

"entirely CGI"?

So that's a 3D model of Fabrizio?

Challenge.

Count me as another "First Impressions" fan. That album rocked my '05. There's always backlash by the hipper than thou. It's human nature.

Me too, I think the Strokes are awesome. The third album rocked just as hard as the rest of them. I mark em all off as "haters" because thats what they are. I'll be willing to bet on the fact that most music critics a bitter failed musicians. Thats why I listen to my ears to tell me whats good and whats not.

As far as being the "saviors of modern rock", I can see that since when they first came to the scene it was filled with utter garbage music. And you know what the rest of the world followed.

I agree. Not sure what all the fuss is about. "First" is full of great tunes and grooves. Fab really kicked it up a notch and the sound is bigger and beefier. The live show was great too. Great vid, glad they finally did it. Albert Hammond, Jr. is killing right now and I'm looking forward to the next impression.

Hey I love the Strokes and I'm not putting them down but I do feel "First Impressions" is a step in the wrong direction (its just all about Julian instead of a collective effort and the production is terrible). With that said there are some amazing tracks off it being this one, Ize, Heart, and Razor. Unfortunately I don't see the Strokes staying together much longer since Julian's starting to collaborate more with others, Albert's taking off on his solo career (which is mediocre but people seem to like it), video's becoming CGI without bands participation, and their shows are beginning to suck (at least the last 2 I've been at)...oh well "Is this It" remains in my top 10

I agree with rgr_moore. FIOE has some great moments but the arrangements and the sequencing songs make the album too stiff, which I thought was the same problem with ROOM ON FIRE. That said, I've been to many show/concerts, seen these guys a bunch of times, and they are the tightest band I ever seen live, no matter what genre. However, because they're sound is so tight and exact they don't have any stage presence which pisses me off every time I see them but somehow, the music makes people dance and act crazy.

so the strokes were launched 40,000 years into the future to repopulate a distant planet? with holograms of themselves? this video was okay, except the intro part with Ize just made me want to see an Ize video instead. FIOE had a lot of solid tracks tho, it was a great part about '05.

correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't there already a video out for this song? they're playing in a room and it starts to fill with water... or was that a video for a different song? ugh, my head hurts, i need coffee...

That's depressing. that video had to have cost more money I will earn in the next six years. I like the Strokes and all, but the song is really cookie cutter in my opinion.

your opinion is wrong. it's not cookie cutter at all. i don't even particularly like the strokes, but this song is fantastic. thanks, though.

i'm a huge fan of the strokes, love them live and FIOE is one of the albums i listen to on a weekly basis, but that video didn't really get me going. i'll stick to the original video.

TPlay (Born Theodoros Plakadopoulos on December 1, 1987) is a Greek American Basketball Player.

Most recently, Theodoros was cut from Victoria Libertas Pesaro, an Italian Team, for attitude problems.
