New Vampire Weekend Video - "Oxford Comma"

thubmnail icon: New Vampire Weekend Video - "Oxford Comma"

Ezra and Chris T. of Les Vampires Lacoste visited prime time cable program Hangin' With MTV yesterday. They chatted with VJ John Sencio and premiered a new short film. (Earlier, Lil Wayne had performed "A Milli" in Tron, so tough act to follow.) There was a pre-taped interview with a former student of Mr. Koenig's from David Ruggles Junior High: "First thing we saw was his boat shoes. He's known for that. ... He would practice [guitar] in the class. Everybody would just laugh at him." Whatever, kid. I bet you learned a lot about commas.

Ezra and Chris T. were invited to share twenty seconds of a video they liked (Chromeo's "Needy Girl"). Perhaps that inspired all the white attire worn in "Oxford Comma"? VW filmed it on a farm in Ancramdale, NY in one long tracking shot. This was the 17th take...

MTV.com is collecting viewer responses to the video. This guy wasn't impressed. Next week: T.I. and No Age! Tune in: youtube.com.

So, I don't really like Vampire Weekend and I haven't listened to this song, and I'm not going to watch this video just because I have other things to do. I was just wondering if it's a bad thing that I know what an Oxford comma is? I'm such a nerd.

First of all, I've always loved single-shot (or near single-shot) music videos. "Karma Police" is an ALMOST single-shot and fantastic.

icanread, you have solidified another pet peeve of mine so much so, that I'm actually going to reprimand a faceless being over the Internet:

It's like the concept of "crazy". Crazy people don't know that they're crazy, right? So if you think you're a nerd for doing/saying/thinking something, then you're not actually a nerd anymore, because you're aware. It reminds me of the "Is it weird that I..." phrase. Also, why would it be a bad thing? It's knowledge of something. Finally, your grammar isn't that great if you use a question mark at the end of a declarative sentence.

I disagree. You're right in that crazy people sometimes don't know they're crazy, but nerdiness doesn't fall into the same "self-aware trap." (and to be honest, most mentally ill people are aware that they are somehow crazy, and that doesn't change the fact that they're still crazy) Every single geek, nerd, poindexter, and dweeb has known or found out at some point that they are nerdy. Doesn't change a thing. Being aware of and OK with your own nerdiness might make you cooler, but you're still just a cool nerd.

Well I'm glad they finally filmed thier own Wes Anderson film to soundtrack.

I mean, seriously, Futura? Can we be a little more derivative please?

Gosh, I totally get where you're coming from. I myself am WAY to busy with all the other stuff I have to do to spend 3 and a half minutes listening to, watching, and paying attention to something so trivial as a pop music video. I could TOTALLY fit in the 2 minutes and 59 seconds it took to read and respond to the comments of said video, though. These 31 second segments will definitely pay off for us down the road. We are the best!!!

I think i'm officially post-backlash now. These guys are pretty different compared to everything else that's around (even though, yes, I realize their music pulls from a lot of other artists), and their songs are pretty likable. If this is what played on most radio stations, I might actually listen to radio again.

I called the wes anderson thing whenever I read that it was inspired by their favorite films. Upperclass white folk? Expect to see futura.

I'll admit it's a badass font, though.

these guys can do no wrong. this is far from their best song, yet they made a fantastic video that makes me like it more than i used to! it disheartens me to see VW, who are completely deserving of their praise, get blasted by people who refuse to like "popular bands."

I'm going to throw this out there and say that I actually like Vampire Weekend. I am by no means obsessed or raving about them, but I think they're good. If you ignore the hype bullshit and just think of them being a fucking band, it's a good pop record. I don't understand why it matters so much to so many people that they're upper class white kids or like grammar. The video is whatever, it's alright.

I watched the show which is called FN MTV not Hangin' With MTV. Also they stated that they filmed 17 takes but the one used was the 11th. Just thought you should know.

I'm really all that into Vampire Weekend, but I really like the idea of FN MTV. Finally someone is trying to get MTV to play some music at a time other than 4 in the morning on a Wednesday.

Oh, and on a side note, oxford comma?

Surely this was meant as an homage to Wes Anderson. It was too obvious to be a rip-off, yes?

Okay so I just watched it and I have to say that despite the backlash (which I myself am a part of), and the obvious hat-tip to Wes Anderson (very very obvious), this is the best music video I've seen in a long, long time. Wonderful.

Both Vampire Weekend and Panic at the Disco are the modern day Hootie and the Blowfish. In 1995, Hootie was more popular than Jesus. I recall workmates saying how great they were. I shook my head then just as I'm shaking my head now.

its funny to see how VW literally shot up to mainstream in like. 6 months. I remember when stereogum featured them as band to watch (eons ago) and i downloaded the mp3s and i wa slike "OOOOH THEYRE AWESOME" and now look. i really like this song, not so sure about the video, but who knows. they played it twice today in the show. lols.

I just don't get how people are making a big deal of their gimmick. They went to college and dress preppy. Wow, no one's ever done that before.

Its funny how you guys turn on a band when all of a sudden they have become popular. One yeah ago everyone in blogs was idolizing them specially Stereogum now its like blogs 'HIP' blogs feel obligated to write about them and old fans hate them because of their MTV popularity. Its a shame how people can change like that.
Thats all.

I agree. I still have that Exit Music (For a Film) in my IPod. Remember when Stereogum featured them? Yeah, they were part of the Stereogum favorites.
Rember now?? pssssht I don't know weather is jeoulusy that they are doing well or the opposite that is making you guys post hateful comments.

I honestly dislike the music video but they're album was defenetly a highlight of 2008. If you put the preppy polos aside they're still a good band.
Think about this: Art is in the eyes of the beholder.
