New Yeasayer Live Video - "Wait For The Summer"
We'll always remember Yeasayer as the ones who taught us about the post-Kokie's Brooklyn scene and for their jam-tastic, psych-choral live shows. Here the boys are, all the way on the left coast at the Echoplex in L.A., asking us to "Wait For The Summer." OK, we will, but only if you take us down to the river.
Judging from the YouTube comments, someone was hit in the head with a shaker during the course of these live actions: See that, hippie indie-rock stuff can be dangerous, too. Very Brooklyn. Yeasayer are currently on a co-headlining tour with fellow Brooklynites MGMT. Who's more colorful? We know, for sure, Yeasayer are better carpenters.

Chris Keating threw a shaker into the crowd during one of Yeasayer's songs. It had already been an awesome set, with Keating antogonizing the L.A. crowd by calling out all the "wannabe actors" and "dream catchers" in the crowd. It was fairly obvious he was kidding around, but there were a few precious members of the audience who took offense. It seems wannabe actors don't like people making fun of them. Anyway, completely unrelated, Keating was rocking out to one of the band's songs, when he threw a shaker into the crowd. Once the song had finished, some guy in the back started whining about how the shaker had hit a girl in the head; making a big deal of it as if she was dead. So, Keating asked "Is she dead?" Somehow managing to offend more members of the audience, while amusing most. The girl was fine. Perhaps she was one of the many audience members who were talking throughout both band's sets. Surely if she had been paying attention to the action she would have seen the shaker heading her way. I saw the shaker headed straight towards me and dodged it with ninja swiftness.
Yeasayer were fantastic and MGMT killed. It was a great night.

Another take on the Maraca-throwing incident. I was close up front and enjoying the set. Basically, Keating was getting pissy because the crowd wasn't rocking out enough for his liking (it's LA, didn't he get the memo?). Ego bruised, he whizzed the maraca out into the crowd out of what seemed like frustration and malice more than anything else ("Listen fuqqers, we're like a totally hot shit buzz band, so love us or prepare for my indie wrath."). I didn't see the girl get crowned, but if you'd looked away for even a second (or, actually been rocking out and listening with your eyes closed), you wouldn't have been able to see it coming. Needless to say, the dickhead response of "is she dead?" didn't help matters and the set basically turned awkward after that, with a drink or two being thrown at the stage. Kudos to Ira (bassist) for playing peacemaker and actually apologizing, which the singer seemed unwilling to do at first. Given that Keating apologized after each of the next 3 or so songs, he must have realized it was a big deal, too.
Moral of story: you make great tunes, don't be a cocksucker. Oh, and MGMT was amazing.

I agree with the first take on the maraca situation. The Echopleax shouldn't have cut into their set. I wrote a long winded response about it here http://mojoerose.blogspot.com

I had only heard two tracks by Yeasayer and the show on saturday really turned me into a fan, despite the maraca incident.
Amazing LA Actor Man, "it's LA, didn't he get the memo?" seems like a cop out. I'm so sick of that kind of attitude out here.
Yeah, there are bound to be talkers and people not into the music at most shows. But the echoplex is huge and has a lounge area, take your apathetic ways to the back and chill the f out about things being thrown. I'm short, which means I can never see the show that well. And have experienced the gambit of collateral damage (i.e. pushing, spillage of drinks, foot stepped on, hit in the face with a wayward hand etc). Do I break the rhythm of the show and make a big deal, no cos it's par for the course.
If you care, Yeasayer's guitarist Anand told me at the tshirt table that they've been banned from the Echoplex for life. Hope you're happy LA. I personally think people need to get over themselves and let shit go.
