New Apse Video - "3.1" (Stereogum Premiere)
The first time we posted Apse's "3.1" we offered it as spliced combo with "The Whip" because the two appeared on a Double A-Side single, but also to showcase the various linked dynamics found on the "outer Cape Cod" quintet's second album Climb Up. Dynamics that exist even when songs don't appear next to each other on the tracklist. The collection's dozens tracks were chiseled down and formed into new structures from pre-existing demos ("turned into working songs") and live full-band improvisations, a process that gives Climb Up an uncanny cohesion. It's interesting to step back from all of that, and the band's home studio, to see what director Lance Drake does with the aforementioned "3.1" by its lonesome. Or, actually, to see what happens with Apse welcomes an outsider into their attic: The kinetic, foundation shaking group dynamic's compelling. As are the shots of a beautiful autumn landscape just outside the windows.
