New Beck Video - "Modern Guilt"

thumbnail icon: New Beck Video - "Modern Guilt"

Last week Beck did "Gamma Ray" for Letterman. This week, he brings us a filmic black and white video for Modern Guilt's bouncy title track. The rest of his band doesn't show up; in fact, the only thread between this and the time we saw Hansen is the man himself/his hat. The narrative: Beck walks the streets of L.A. with a sort of Mod/Beatnik coffee shop dwelling/Austin Powers-inspired stalker on his tail. The guy uses various modes of transportation to keep apace with Beck, who walks really fast and carefree because he has L. Ron Hubbard in his corner. Which might also explain the surprise ending.

Modern Guilt is out via XL/Interscope.

Was that fucking Dieter from Sprockets doing the cartwheel? What a shitball video. I like Beck but if he puts out a video for Chemtrails he needs to get Gondry to do it for him.

I think I've come to the conclusion that Juana Molina's new album "Un Dia" is the most stunning since "Odelay"... anybody with love for Animal Collective or thought that second Porno for Pyros album wasn't halff bad should really give it a try... thanks for staying on top of things Gum!

Pretty sure that's his touring keyboard player, actually.

I keep thinking how great it would be if in a shock move beck cut his hair, ditched the hat and one night stormed the stage in that glittery cowboy suit circa '96, with the break dance and falsetto voice.

Failing that though, he could try and make a sweet video again maybe? I'm with the Gondry vote.

I dunno, the awkward hug at the end was kind of funny. I'm sure most of the video was quoting a movie I haven't seen?

he's the touring keyboard player and band leader. no one in Beck's band, except for the keyboard dude, are allowed to engage in any type of interaction with Beck. if they have a question, they have to ask Brian. Scientology done right in this case. Hired guns keep your mouth shut. I know all of this to be fact.

I really liked this video...felt like it was shot in the '60's, much like most of the album.

Through an Austin Powers shagadelic-yeah-baby filter, maybe...

(must like most of the album)

The 60s vibe, the somersaults, and the jump-cut teleports all seem to evoke "A Hard Day's Night." But that's hardly "modern"...or "guilty." Oh, that wacky Beck!

"no one in beck's band, except the keyboard player, is allowed to engage in any kind of interaction with him" -- seriously?? That doesn't sound very practical, or plausible. Those puppet videos make it look like they're all kind of buds. i really don't want to think he's really just another talented tool.

i second the Gondry comment. I'd watch anything he did though, even that weird David Cross POS (literally).

It'd be cool for Gondry to do a Beck video again, but video budgets are so low these days, I don't think MG would be able to do anything all that cool. His videos were always huge budget blockbusters.

Yeah, that's his keyboardist Brian Le Barton wearing the get up he wears when fronting the hair metal parody band Wounded Cougar which also features other members of Beck's band.
