New Devendra Banhart - "Chin Chin & Muck Muck" & "Baby" (Live In San Francisco)

thumbnail icon: New Devendra Banhart - "Chin Chin & Muck Muck" & "Baby" (Live In San Francisco)

In a Coachella warm-up of sorts -- or, at least, a show that happened prior to Coachella -- Devendra Banhart and his backing quintet played a packed show at San Francisco's Independent. Natalie Portman's shaved ex premiered a couple of new songs in the process. We weren't there, but the folks at EachNoteSecure were and note:

Lightheartedly, Banhart warned the opening song "Chin Chin and Muck Muck", "[is] not going to sound anything like this if you ever hear it... this will probably deter you from ever wanting to hear it." And muttered, "Here we go, I'm gonna shut up."

We'll do the same while you listen to the slightly silly "Chin Chink & Much Muck" along with the less elaborately titled "Baby," which, bear with me, sounds like the Strokes. Truth.

"Chin Chin & Muck Muck"

"Baby"

(Both via EachNoteSecure)

He played two other new tracks, "Three Ball Paul Can't Help But Smile" and "Angelica," but we don't have proof of those. When we do, you'll have it too.

Oh Me Oh My... and the Black Babies EP are almost impossible for me to listen to with all the hiss and everything sounding like it was pitch shifted up, which is a shame because there are some good songs hiding in there. I disagree with his best stuff being his early stuff, but I can at least understand it more when the recordings were a little cleaner, like on Rejoicing In the Hands or Nino Rojo. Cripple Crow is my favorite album so far, but I still enjoyed most of Smokey..., Surfing by Megapuss, and look forward to the next album.

This was a great show and I fucking love seeing shows at the Independent. "Three Ball Paul Can't Help But Smile" and "Angelica" were solid - hope you find them.

Am I the only one who absolutely loved Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon?

No, probably not. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy it, and I definitely don't think it's as terrible as most people try to claim. I just happen to love Cripple Crow more.

No, it's his best and most complete album. "Freely," "Bad Girl" and "Seaside" are impossibly beautiful.

nino rojo is his finest. i like the new track "baby" though. i feel like he rarely tours the east coast-- i'd love to see him.

A fine, fine, FINE treasure recently uncovered is a tape of demos Stills did, released as "Just Roll Tape"...68 was the championship season for him and Crosby. The first albums the best because it's the only time they may have been really motivated to work together. A nice playlist companion would be Frank Blacks famous demo he made just before the Pixes hit the studio the next day...springtime psychotic troubador stuff..

I'm pretty certain that on every album he's released, there have been many a killer track. I tried to figure out my favourite album the other day and I couldn't commit. I think he may be one of those artists that you'll always love because he's such a beautiful musician. But I agree, when he was taking lots of acid was best. He does weird well.
