New Dum Dum Girls Videos - "Catholicked" & "Blank Girl"

thumbnail icon: New Dum Dum Girls Videos - "Catholicked" & "Blank Girl"

For those of you who've given up on the Vivian Girls because of that bathtub interview, here's a chance to wipe the slate clean and find some all-Girls noise-pop by someone from another coast. We've been enjoying L.A.'s Dum Dum Girls quite a bit in these parts. Much like associate Blank Dogs -- they record together as the very excellent the Mayfair Set -- Dum Dum Girls' name might be plural, but it's actually the project of one Girl, a librarian named Dee Dee. (See, she has a day job. And as far as I can tell, she's never dissed blooming onions.) Her songs make a nice pairing with other distorted California pop by the likes of Wavves, Crocodiles, etc. And she's said that her moniker is a tribute to the Vaselines and the Stooges. She just posted a video for "Blank Girl," a duet she did with the aforementioned Crocodiles' Brandon Welchez, along with one for the older track, "Catholicked," both using found footage to add images to the lo-fi hooks.

Hey,

Cool songs. I was wondering how I can get my music on Stereogum?

There is no way I would ever listen to a band named the Dum Dum Girls. Sure, names are just names but I have my limits.

Dum Dum Girls are pretty good. Besides a couple tunes here and there, I've only heard her CD-R EP from last year (which contains "Catholicked") and its not bad. Her cover of the Stones' "Play With Fire" is cool though. I won't ever rave about her, but she's alright (waiting on the 12" from Captured Tracks to fully make up my mind). She seems to work better with others because "Blank Girl" is one the best songs I've heard from her and The Mayfair Set is really awesome (maybe because I eat up anything Blank Dogs does).

and ENOUGH of the "Friends" version of obscure classics... It's so easy to get the REAL version of "Girl Don't Tell Me" and "Ram" etc...

I WOULD rave about her. And I will.
I love her. Baby Don't Go is in my top tracks of the year for sure.
And I still love Vivian Girls, squid brains!

Dum Dum Girls and Mayfair Set rules...

(and by the way, check out the new Mark Sultan song - don't forget the roots of modern lo-fi).

Still can't mention Vivian Girls without bringing up bathtubs? How petty can a website be.

HAH
Neither is her name Dee Dee nor is she a librarian. She doesn't have a day job, she's a a spoiled bitch, just like the Vivian Girls.
Fucking "artists" and their shrouds of mystery, how phony.

The vocals are very pleasant and I'd probably like hearing these songs at a friend's or on the radio but they're going to have to do something more interesting with the arrangements or learn a few more chords to get me to buy their music.

Man, still bringing up the whole uncensored interview thing, does anyone else even care anymore? Are you guys just trying to make sure we don't forget? It's such a stupid thing to harp on. I doubt stereogum even disagree with what the girls said as much as just don't like them, so they're making a big deal out of it. Neverminding that, dum dum girls is ok at best, a flash in the pan that won't last. I'd be surprised if someone was listening to this record two years down the line. I've also heard (from reliable sources,) "Dee Dee" is no librarian, but at least she's not dissing TGIFriday's, right?

Just got that Dum Dum Girls first 7" that came out on Hozac Records this week in their 7" singles club, and the debut album is coming soon on Hozac, can't wait for that.
