New Former Ghosts Video - "Hold On" (Stereogum Premiere)
At the start of the month we posted "Unfolding," a whispered bit of darkness by Former Ghosts, the emotionally raw synthpop project of This Song Is a Mess But So Am I's Freddy Ruppert, Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart, and Nika Roza of Zola Jesus. When asking Ruppert about "Unfolding," a melancholic, romantic love song featuring fractured people with missing parts, he told us:
It wasn't really intended for a release or anything ... I was going through a tumultuous time in a relationship with someone I was completely, insanely, head over heels in love with and I just recorded this song and mailed it to her apartment. The song is basically saying that when you are ready to face this, I'm still here, and that I want you to still be there with all the same things that I fell in love with.
You get a heart-on-the-sleeve feel in the Amir Shoucri-directed clip for "Hold On," one of Fleurs's anthemic moments. It comes with a puke-on-the-toilet-seat feel, too.
Ruppert explains:
The "Hold On" music video documents a night of self punishment at the hands of mixing as many different alcohols as possible (including a scene of a new drink called the "Narsty Dad" that mixes Campari with Nyquil) due to a case of the common heartbreak. What starts off as a goofy night at the Redondo Beach Pier quickly deteriorates into a depressing, shameful, self induced alcohol poisoning barf fest. We've all been there. Kind of.

Wonder what was in that puke...
In between all the free mp3s they've released, I already have half the album. The rest are on my to-download list.
I just watched a couple of live videos and interview on YouTube via woodshopfilms. For those interested.

It's kind of like MTV's Jackass meets really bad music.
Calling this legitimate art is like calling a dog poop a taco because it has cilantro on it.
There's a difference between sincere emotion and histrionics.
Barf.

This is so bad.
So many people in LA are willing to listen to anyone who takes a crap at the smell.
"Do you like music that blurs the lines between irony and a severe lack of talent? Then you'll love this! It's called check-out-my-haircut rock. It's kind of like the original post-punk movement but without any musical or lyrical talent. Now watch me drink and cry."

you should have someone whipping you with a cat-o-nine tails. Or maybe someone should nail you to a cross and then you can swap your song out for the score of that cheesy christian video from the 90's of Jesus being crucified. yay!
