New Franz Ferdinand Video - "Ulysses"
So what we have in the lead single to Tonight: Franz Ferdinand is the Kapranos crew tumbling one of their signature disco hooks through some Spoon, some dirty club synths, and a narcotic, half-time (and somewhat throwaway) bridge. The video picks up on all of it, and also the crime scene album cover, showing the guys in their signature suits but looking like they've been out too late on the town with an eight-ball. As evidence I'd cite the hollowed out eyes and the restless hotel room shots, but also the strip club, the midnight run through the desert, the manic cackling, and most definitely the late night trip to the laundromat. There's only time when all of that's a good idea, and that time is when you are a coke zombie.
They found a new way. Here's a version of the song in the studio, and there's also a live taste of "What She Came For" out there. Tonight: Franz Ferdinand is out 1/26 via Domino.

Are the white shoes on the checkered walkway supposed to be a reference to Billie Jean?
This song doesn't seem quite as punchy as Franz Ferdinand's previous work, but I love this band.

Yeah, that must be a Billie Jean reference.

Watching it a second time I think they look more like more like Joe Jackson's shoes from Look Sharp! Now I want white pointy shoes.

Yikes, my world has been rocked twice today. I'm getting out of this joint. I only had 6 hours of sleep, for goodness sake.

I just came.

Their best stuff so far, but they still don't quite know who they are.

Definitely Spoon. Is that Andy Serkis in there? The sidewalk moves put me in the mind of Buckaroo Banzai's closing credits (see also "Steve Zissou").

I said goddaaaaam the pusher man!
that was pretty cool

It's hard to hate Franz Ferdinand.
They're sort of like the 21st Century's answer to The Beets from Doug. "Take Me Out" sounded too good to be true, a la "Killer Tofu" and we wished this fake band would continue to make music. Only they have. So in your face, Chap Lippman.
Score = 12
like watching one of those 80s movies where nothing really happens, you are just following people around as they waste their lives away... pretty cool video and the song is not bad at all!
kudos on knowing how to include the entire band and not seem shoved for the sake of it.

That "strip club" is actually Club Spaceland in LA. The blue and silver curtain gives it away. If the guy with his mouth open was Brett Ratner, then I would have hated this video.

fantastic!

Alex Kapranos is such a beautiful man.
Song's not too shabby either, and that video is pretty slick.

I really like this song and "Lucid Dreams." Looking forward to the album.

ya...don't get me wrong, i lurve FF. "Lucid Dreams" has me psyched as well about the new album, but sometimes i wonder if they're becoming just a more sinister Duran Duran for the 00's. I suppose that wouldn't be such a bad thing, but they could do better, you know?

Fucking great video. I at least orgasmed three times while watching this. Alex Kapranos looked fucking hot. The video was just as I imagined it would be.partying, drugs, etc.

Does anyone else notice that the version that leaked before the official single release is slightly different than the studio version? The vocals are placed a little later on the track, and yes I realize that this is the real version, but I kind of got used to the first version. Must have been part of that remix contest.
Anyway, another new one from them, "Twilight Omens", very cool synths and tempo changes, and short enough for multiple repeats:

1) Yeah, I definitely noticed that the timing of the vocals varies in the two version. It really bothered me at first, but I'm used to it now.
2) Thanks for the link!
