New Ida Maria (Feat. Iggy Pop) Video - "Oh My God" (Stereogum Premiere)

thumbnail icon: New Ida Maria (Feat. Iggy Pop) Video - "Oh My God" (Stereogum Premiere)

As mentioned, Norwegian rocker Ida Maria recently re-released her catchy Fortress Round My Heart opener "Oh My God" with additional vocals courtesy of Iggy Pop, aka the new Tony Bennett. (In the last few months Pop's placed his baritone on songs by Jemina Pearl, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, and The BPA, while releasing a jazz-inflected album.) As odd as some of the combos seem, his work with Maria makes sonic sense. The two also appear to be having a good time in this Stefan Tornby-directed Alice Loveday-animated clip.

The "Oh My God (Feat. Iggy Pop)" single's out now. The Norwegian rocker recently dropped off the Perez Hilton Presents tour, citing exhaustion: "Dear Friends and Fans. I am so very sorry but I cannot finish this tour. After touring in Scandinavia, Europe, the UK, Australia, Japan and the USA for 3 years straight I am just completely exhausted. I have learned that I am not a superwoman."

Wow. Horrible. I was afraid when I heard an Ida Maria song in a shampoo commercial the other night on TV. This is much worse...

The Iggy Popless version is great. This is awful.

It is the Bizarro World version of Grizzly Bear and Michael McDonald.

I saw her perform as part of a festival this summer in Bangor. She was so very drunk. Still put on a pretty good show though. This however.............

I love Ida with an incredible passion. I have listened to her album at least two or three times a week (and usually more) every week since December. I've seen her live three times, front row for each.* I've probably listened to "Oh My God" 300 times in the past 300 days.

I have now listened to this version of "Oh My God" three times, and I don't need to hear it a fourth time. Guuuuuuuuuh.

*Last time, she gave me a prolonged hug- while she was still on stage (at the end of her cover of, naturally, the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog"). I've had a pretty awesome life, but that was one of my best moments ever, hands down.

While it seems most were disappointed in this version of the song, I am far more disappointed in having to sit through that atrocious music video. Its like neither Lamanna nor Essam had ever even heard the song - much less heard of Iggy Pop and the fact that he has no business twirling around in a cutesy cartoon bird cage.

Yikes, all around.

I gotta say, its not what I expected when I heard about this duet. But Iggy Pop is an ICON, this may not be his element, but the man has inspired so many brillant musicians. Ida, as usual, you are fantastic. I'm glad this song has finally been made into the duet it was intended to be.

Cute, but where's the energy that got her all the fans in the first place? Check out this version, which I think was her first ever tv-performance of this song on norwegian chart-show Topp20. http://nrk.no/p3tv/goto/?bcpid=13413547001&bctid=1276249255

It seems the energy got sucked out of this when she gained 30 pounds. She's got a thumbhead now!!

I love Ida Maria, but I'm going to have to agree with pretty much everyone else and say that this is awful. Iggy probably could've sounded pretty cool on this song if they'd arranged and recorded it with him originally, but instead they just cut and pasted a redub. The video however is entirely inexcusable. 0 Energy.

This is great. I don't know what you people are talking about with the insults. You don't think Iggy has done enough to earn some cred with you do nothings?

Let's get it right. Iggy Pop works non stop making great music if he does an insurance ad or not. You people browse stereogum and are told what to do. Iggy Pop is God and you people are a bunch of amateur slaves.

Like, O My God. What are you gonna do about it?

This seems like a good place to put this. Spin Magazine lists this album as one of the best of 09. However, if you check Amazon.com you'll see that the album came out in England in the Summer of 08. I'm reminded that Radiohead released In Rainbows in '07 and it made everyone's best of. The physical American release wasn't until '08, but nobody was foolish enough to put it on their 08 lists. Isn't this a case of Spin trying to gloss over their inability to pick out the album when it came out originally? Discuss....
