New M83 Video - "We Own The Sky"

thumbnail icon: New M83 Video - "We Own The Sky"

Call it fansourcing, call it laziness, but the "make our music video!" press releases that flood Stereogum's inbox make me yearn for the days of "Scream." Of course labels have no money and MTV/VH1 only programs videos for insomniacs, so I empathize with artists forced to support homemade garbage. But sometimes inspiration strikes and everybody wins. That's the sitch for M83's new clip, the best submission among 83 budding Gondrys. The sorta-professional sounding but actually teenage "director's label and design collective" Young Replicant were behind the camera and FX for this lens flared kite and confetti party. It was Anthony Gonzalez's fave because "I like the atmosphere of it cause it fits perfectly to the music and the lyrics. It's exactly what I had in mind when I wrote the song." Nice work, Young Replicant. My submission would've been a remake of The Breakfast Club so either way it would've ended with a makeout scene.

M83 will be opening for Depeche Mode in Europe this spring. Tubular:

There's something about slow-motion and jump cuts... I like it!

I believe the video is private because it's going to be premiered on pitchfork soon.

First thing: the author who wrote this article doesn't deserve any respect because:
1) he doesn't know how things work in the music video industry
2) is not very well informed, which is sad for a journalist, even if it's a mere music journalist

"Of course labels have no money and MTV/VH1 only programs videos for insomniacs, so I empathize with artists forced to support homemade garbage. But sometimes inspiration strikes and everybody wins."

Before calling names and pointing fingers, the authour should know that it's been a huge difference between the M83 and Radiohead music video contests.

Whilst Radiohead's was very professional - the process was a multi-step one, and in keeping with the band's marketing philosophy of choice - listen to 'In Rainbows' for free or pay as much as you want. The entrants had a lot of pre-prod and post-prod time on their hands, a plan was being followed and, most important, they had about 10,000 budgets to work with.

M83/ Mute on the other hand: changed the deadline, didn't offer any budgets to work with, their prizes and, most importantly, communication skills are very very poor. Their call for free videos was nothing but a cheap publicity stunt.

So I'd advise against comparing garbage home videos with 10k fan made vids, or even M83 with Radiohead.

I guess they removed it everywhere because they're going to "debut" it on Pitchfork next month.

The whole thing is kinda rotten to the people who entered, because M83 is asking everyone to take down the videos that didn't win.
