New Matthew Sweet Live Video - "Byrdgirl" (Acoustic)

thumbnail icon: New Matthew Sweet Live Video - "Byrdgirl" (Acoustic)

We recently let you know about a few Matthew Sweet streams related to his new record, Sunshine Lies. The consensus? The commenters, most of them "longtime fans," weren't impressed with the sounds ("Blech, I love Matthew Sweet and was looking forward to this, but I've heard it and it sucks," "Speaking as a longtime Sweet fan, I hate to say it but these songs are dreadful," etc.), but it was noted that "Byrdgirl" is one of brighter moments on an otherwise "disappointing album." In this video, Sweet does an acoustic take on the byrd song. Let's see if he wins anybody back. Or maybe his new material's simply as bad as his spelling.

Not entirely sure what GetBack is all about, or if they get the metaphor, but it was nice of them to focus poignantly on the girl with the bird.

Sunshine Lies is out 8/26 on Shout! Factory.

Yeah, I hate to say it, but this album is one of the blandest things Sweet has done--excepting the dreadful Thorns project. Considering that his last two albums of original material--"Kimi Ga Suki" and "Living Things"--were over four years ago and both exhibited that he could continue to refine/grow/change his sound while writing great songs, it's sad that so much of "Sunshine Lies" is bland and forgettable.

I just checked out this video and the earlier audio streams and it's left me wondering what drugs all the haters are on. Bland? He effing rocks out on some of the tracks I've heard, and if Byrdgirl doesn't give you the pure-pop warm and fuzzies, you're past help.

I agree with Michael. This seems like it will be his best record yet. The guy has become a rock standard. If you can't appreciate Matthew's music I would argue you don't like music at all.

Honestly...

This is, in my opinion, Matthew Sweet's greatest record. I've rarely heard an album I've enjoyed more. All those who say it's bland or whatever are beyond my understanding. Great record; Great video; Great musician.

Matt's in great voice, and the new songs sound very strong indeed. I loved Kimi (I wake up to it every single day, in fact), wasn't so hot on Living Things, but this album promises to be better than both, based upon the five or six songs I've found streaming from various and sundry music sites. (I'm *very* glad he left "Badass" off the album - that one is pretty dire.)
