New Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band Video - "Albatross Albatross Albatross" (Stereogum Premiere)
A year ago today (7/31) we suggested you keep your eyes peeled for Seattle's Mt St. Helens Vietnam Band. Coincidentally, it's also the first anniversary of the quintet's debut show. Really, what better time then to take a look at the Matt Daniels-directed video for "Albatross Albatross Albatross," a track from the crew's self-titled Dead Oceans debut. It's an idyllic old-timey clip set in a gorgeous landscape, but things shift dramatically when the male half of a happy couple shoots someone by mistake when hunting gulls. The lesson? Dense forests aren't good places to be haunted by ghosts.
Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band is out via Dead Oceans. If you're around the actual Mount St. Helens, the band's doing a performance 8/15 at the Mount St. Helens Institute (at Mount St. Helens Volcanic Monument). As the press release puts it:
Dollars raised at this event will go to build new exhibits within the various public observatories at the Mount St. Helens Monument, in advance of the 30th anniversary of the volcano's eruption. As part of these pre-anniversary festivities, MSHVB will be guided by the Mount St. Helens Monument's leading scientists to various sites throughout the monument, such as the pumice fields, and Mount St. Helens southern ridge, which was blown-off during the historic eruption. This event also marks the first time a band has ever played a volcano in the continental United States ... The concert, at Mount St. Helens' Johnston Ridge Observatory will support development of the "Taking the Pulse of an Active Volcano" exhibit at Mount St. Helens. The event will begin with a presentation by Dr. John Bishop, a published Mount St. Helens researcher, who will discuss the changing landscape since the 1980 eruption.
