New Pains of Being Pure At Heart Video - "Young Adult Friction"
Recent Record Store Day DJs the Pains Of Being Pure Of Heart delivered Carson Daily a fairly nervous take on their "Young Adult Friction," but when you find the Slumberland pop crew at home in bed with brown drinks, copies of Ghosts Among Us, Fifteen (hey, young adult fiction), Emile Durkheim's Suicide, and their various skeleton friends, it's a different matter entirely. They go a bit subliminal in this one, so stay sharp during the various flickers.

i love this song! but i think they could have done something better with the video :(

is the singer gay? because the band and song are
Score = -40
that is impeccable rational. however you are wrong. this song is pretty awesome and i hate fuzz.
Score = 3
This band sounds just like Belle and Sebastian with fuzz in the background. Not sure why no one ever calls out indie bands for being shamelessly derivative of one another.
Score = -18
Every band sounds like somebody else. To call them out is meaningless. They sound a lot more like Orange Juice, who B&S also rip off. If you think art can only be appreciated because it is original, then you will no doubt have a hard time appreciating art.
Score = 8
they sound most like the Field Mice
Score = 4
I see what you're saiyng -- but I think there are gradations. After all, "sounding like someone else" isn't the same as shamelessly ripping off their aesthetic even down to the album cover. To pretend that there's no difference between influence and boring, soulless copycating seems disingenous.
Score = 5
This. I find there songs are quite unoriginal and mostly sound the same, but i love them just the same. It sounds good, the why dosn't matter.

Some of us do intelligently point out how derivative and relatively uninspired a lot of Indie music is, but generally what happens to us is that individuals who like a particular act will respond with unintelligent and thinly disguised insults like "If you think art can only be appreciated because it is original, then you will no doubt have a hard time appreciating art."

I've been listening to this band and I can't help but to feel it lacks something. I mean the melodies are catchy and noisy, but I feel some of the tracks have got no body, this one for example feels like it's floating on thin air.
I really love "Everything with you" though, I guess it's because of the way the bass plays around with the drums.
Score = 4
This is my favorite song...I love the jangly guitars.

WOO PBPH may 5 see you there!

Every now and then Pitchfork loves to play kingmaker to some pleasant, but hardly great band (Pains..., Vivian Girls, etc.) before it goes back to bashing 99% of similar bands. It still baffles me how much they loved Franz Ferdinand, but hated The Killers. Love MGMT, ignore/hate Chester French.
Score = 2
Man most of you people are leaving so negative comments. Soupstain you suck! And I noticed all of the comments you leave are negative. Go blog on like the disney page loser. I think the Video is awesome and this band is one of my new favorites.
Score = 1
Soupstain does suck. What a horrible human being.

I love this song! Come on, "Young Adult Friction". Then the opening line- 'Between stacks in the library' all the way into the "'Don't Check ME Out!' bit, wow. How can any library lover -nevermind librarian -not love all that?
Score = 2
not to mention the microfiche reference. Problem is you have to drown out the fuzz to discern the lyrics. still so catchy, though.

Hey team, help me fill this in. I like some of these songs a lot, and I went to one of their shows last week. When I listen, this game just seems easier than with most other bands. I think the Cure and New Order fit somewhere in here too:
1. Contender - JAMC
2. Come Saturday - Belle&Sebastian ("Dylan in the Movies"), wtf Green Day ("Sassafras Roots")
3. Young Adult Friction - Orange Juice, B&S, the Smiths (the "don't check me out" build-up)
4. This Love Is Fucking Right! (TPOBPAH, "Come Saturday")
5. Tenure Itch
6. Stay Alive - My Bloody Valentine, Sixpence None the Richer ("Kiss Me")
7. Everything with You
8. Teenager in Love
9. Hey Paul - JAMC
10. Gentle Sons

you shouldn't waste your life doing stuff like this.

i do not get this band nor the hype

Most bands' and artists' first album is derivative of their influences, no matter how good the album is. Springsteen started his career by biting on Dylan and Orbison. My Bloody Valentine started as a shitty Cramps-influenced kitsch band. How many punk bands owe a debt to the Ramones or Ricard Hell? How many electronic acts to Suicide or Daft Punk? Yeah, occasionally someone is gonna blow us away with that amazing debut album that is so completely, amazingly original that everyone is in awe, but that's rare. Almost everyone's favorite band started by "borrowing" from their favorite bands. I'm not saying nothing is original, it just most bands time to develop their own sound.
