New Patrick Wolf Video - "Hard Times"

thumbnail icon: New Patrick Wolf Video - "Hard Times"

When Patrick came by for a Progress Report, he told us his new album The Bachelor was inspired by a depressing but creatively fruitful tour and was substantially composed in his head while thinking about sex, and the world, and sex in the world. The "Vulture" video was the sado-sexed up one; "Hard Times" is more global lyrically ("In these hard times I'll work harder for revolution") and a little less revealing visually (that is, you won't see his ass). Instead the Ace Norton-directed kaleidoscopic clip for this Bachelor standout has Wolf dressed like a ren-faire alien in an outfit by Ada Zanditon and coated in fluorescent blacklight paint for maximum revolutionary drama. It's gripping, but sorry to disappoint you neanderthals he won't get his cock out.

Patrick on the video:

For me this video is my homage to two of my biggest heroes, Elvis Presley and Klaus Nomi. I always wondered what both of those geniuses would be doing if they were both still with us. Elvis and Klaus were some of the greatest radical visionaries the world has ever seen, never forget them. This is my first music video shot outside of the United Kingdom, filmed all on Pier 52, I think, on Manhattan Island, a couple of piers down from the home of Studio 54. The outfit I am wearing was made by my long term collaborator Ada Zanditon out of bin bags from Whitechapel Market in London flown to New York in its own suitcase at great excess baggage cost. It was an absolute mind altering experience working with Ace Norton, This guy is definitely the Michel Gondry of my generation. I cant wait to collaborate with him and his amazing team in the future. Big love to all the dancers, make up artists and performance artists in the video, to Charles Manning for making the costumes for my army and to Marvin for making this all happen for me and my hard times song.

Here's an amateurish but watchable peek behind the scenes of the shoot.

The Bachelor is out 6/2 digitally and 8/11 physically via NYLON in the States, and Patrick's own Bloody Chamber Music in the UK.

THIS VIDEO IS SO AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! I actually liked Vulture, too. I mean, Patrick is hot (and really nice; met him several times in London). But, this video is a whole new ball game!

Everything get better around the middle of the song/video. The silly string ending made me smile.
