New Patrick Wolf Video - "Vulture"

thubmnail icon: New Patrick Wolf Video - "Vulture"

Patrick Wolf's forthcoming The Bachelor LP is high on our radar, and not just because it was financed by his fans or because Tilda Swinton guests. Though those are certainly two facts that are hard to forget. We may also have a hard time forgetting the image of Patrick in a dog collar, which hit the Internet Monday. Now the provocative video for the dark new wavey "Vulture" is available for public viewing too. Assuming you're not at work. From Patrick's MySpace: "[The video] shows an enraptured, semi naked Patrick writhing in a full S&M, bondage outfit. The controversial scenes are intercut with those of Patrick as the leather clad 'Vulture' and as an unmasked icon. Inspired by experiences Patrick gained and suffered on the American leg of the 2007 'Magic Position' tour, the video perfectly depicts these experiences, which Patrick describes as 'getting involved in some dodgy satanic sex games and exploring the many dark sides of Los Angeles.'" Tilda Swinton's not in it, no, but Patrick's butt is.

Patrick directed and Rory Broadfoot served as Director of Photography. Also via MySpace: "The beautiful leather and bondage wear was provided by the visionary avant garde designers Fleet Ilya and the sculptural vulture cape was commissioned especially by Patrick as part of 'The Bachelor' wardrobe from acclaimed up and coming designer Ada Zanditon." Though I'm sure you recognized their work.

The "Vulture" single is out 4/20, followed by The Bachelor 6/1 on Patrick's own Bloody Chamber Music.

i think the real story behind this video is he made it in retaliation to the Franz Ferdinand "No You Girls" video.

I'd like this better if it weren't for the following reasons:

A) He's ripping off every Trent Reznor video ever.
B) It sounds like a Depeche Mode cover he did using a Casio keyboard he bought at a garage sale.
C) He had a better body. Sorry, I can't do skinny-but-flabby. It creeps me out.

he's ripping off soft cell more than anything... their never aired in the us "sex dwarf" video still outdoes any such 'grasps' at racey like this to this day. i fail to see the marvel of this guy yet... and it saddens me a bit because i feel as if i want to understand it.

Reminds me of Lizz King. I saw her perform at Dan Deacon's presents the Baltimore Round Robin.

I've actually been listening to his three albums for the first time in the past few days. The song itself isn't really that disappointing; it's just kind of boring. The video, though, is way too self-indulgent. Oh wells.

This is the sort of "work" an artist looks back on in 20 years time and cringes. Embarassing, derivative, cliche, postmodern drivel. Yikes. This is bad, "cheesy night at the gay disco in Montreal" kind of bad. Can we be a bit more demanding of ourselves please?

Wow, you snobs take this stuff way too seriously. I for one think this video is super hot, and while the song isn't my fave of Patrick's, it's still pretty cool. Plus, he's a really nice guy, and you all shouldn't make fun of him. He's just having some kinky fun.

Plus, what does it mean for someone to go out of their way to make fun of something. It's sort of pathetic!

phil and pigass, I'd just like to point out that calling someone a "fag" typically doesn't make you any more of a man, but instead just puts a big ol' pink -- I mean, red flag by the fact that you're either ... overcompensating for something, or have something to hide. Just sayin'.

Actually, what I was saying is that a person has the right to call someone a fag over the internet. I don't call people fags, but you're free to, just as you're free to disagree with the person calling someone fag. I was more upset by the childish and gratuitous swearing, it made lookie-here seem like an whiny baby who needed to punctuate his non-argument with "fucking".

I'm sorry I didn't give the cunt (there I go again!) who decided to just call him a "giant super fag" the time of day of a legitimate argument. But yes, wow "pigass". You're right, thanks for enlightening me to the fact that people CAN say fag on the internet. Keep fighting the right battles! (also, you used the "fucking" term three times? so?)

There is a marvellously all-encompassing Jekyll & Hyde double act going on with Patrick Wolf. Yes, fans who jumped on The magic possion bus will (glady) fuck off in search of somthing a bit more commercial - This avant Garde slice of sex pie is not an imitator of cheesy postmodernism (even if it is, Patrick worked with Leigh Bowery, aged 14), its the aesthetic right to variation in action - he's never done anything like this before. I hope he never stops changing. Love It.

There's individuals who post differing opinions, of course, it just seems like oftentimes in threads like these all the comments that say "this sucks" or any variant have like -9 and yet the "this is good" opinion is not voiced too much. Not that I really care, just what I have observed.

There's an over-seriousness (overact much?) in the video that comes across as sort of cartoonish, which would be fine if that was what Wolf was going for, but I don't think he was.

It's similar to muse's supermassive blackhole, in the change of direction and the sound itself, whilst still keeping it avant garde. Underdeveloped you say? I think not - He is conveying the maddness of mainstream, or rather the darker underbelly of it. The 'forest fires' of California allude to his semi-meltdown and the loss of reality during his USA tour - the resut of which has transformed him into the 'Vulture'; a very dark and sexy part of his 'Bachelor' character.

Hmm, first listen/impression not great to be honest. I have always loved Patrick Wolf immensley. His frist two album Lycanthropy and Wind in the Wires and staggeringly perfect works of classical/folk meets electronic/pop. The Magic Posaition wasn't as good but still had some great songs. However, the tidbits i've heard from his new work and now this, leave me feeling a bit worried that he's lost the plot abit. Why work with Alec Empire when you;re an awesome producer yourse;lf? A.E. is great but if the whole album is pumped up cliched electro like this wiuth no sibtelty at all then i get the feeling its gonna be bad. Plus the song wasn;t that strong musically or lyrically under all the production, never mind the video.
maybe it will grow on me.

Oh Patrick. Sometimes he does things that most people just won't get, but as with most things I feel that it's passion that matters and this boy has A LOT of passion. The song isn't my favorite, and I feel that the video could have used less of the vulture shots. Combined with the smoke and the wig, I felt like I was in the 80s a bit. On the other hand, the outfit when he first starts singing is stunning, and his hair looks awesome. He has such a nice voice, and I wish that this song showed it off more instead of the heavy electronic sound. Still Patrick is an extraordinary talent, and I am sure that there are better things yet to come from him.
