New Rasputina Video - "1816"

Rasputina's new album, Oh Perilous World, takes its source material from notes kept by Melora Creager since the release of Perplexions. Basically, she said that current events were "more bizarre than anything I could scrounge up from the distant past", but that doesn't mean there weren't some obvious connections to be drawn between "now" and "then". The album's opener, "1816", covers the infamous "Year Without a Summer" (a.k.a. "Salted Cod's Finest Hour"), in which a world-wide cold, rainy year devastated crops and starved millions. It wasn't without some upside, as the video illustrates (think "Frankenstein") but it's hard to imagine anyone looking back on Global Climate Change's opus as fondly. Wish we hadn't eaten all the cod.

(In response to one early comment from the "streams vs. mp3s" post (about Quicktime embeds slowing down some browsers) we've tucked the Quicktime stream after the jump so you can skip if you don't like cellos, history, or cool animation and what are you, the new hair metal? But, seriously, click that link down there and watch the video.)

Ahh, many thanks. And this is a far better solution than my overreaching "NO MORE QUICKTIME" edict.

Oh Perilous World, in my opinion, is very beautiful and intelligent. I dont think Rasputina is necessarily goth, but an amalgam of chamber, folk, and rock. I think its a very intelligent album. The only song that lacks is Choose Me for Champion, which is much better live. I've seen them live 5 times since july of 2006. THey're the best live band. Jonathon's drumming live is much better and for some reason is downplayed on the albums (even radical recital!). As far as the future, I dont care. They've released an amazing album that outshines most others.
