New Shugo Tokumaru Video - "Clocca" (Stereogum Premiere)

thumbnail icon: New Shugo Tokumaru Video - "Clocca" (Stereogum Premiere)

Prodigal pop amalgamist Shugo Tokumaru plays all his instruments (unless he's being backed by the National and Beirut dudes) and multi-tracks his way into rarified space, spinning contemporary and classical Western music forms into a patchwork of highly original, often fantastical set pieces. This animated clip for for "Clocca," from last year's excellent Exit LP, nicely captures the surreal, slightly twisted children's-suite quality to Shugo's music. There's a watchmaker and a forest; birds, clock gears, and boats move and morph in circular motion, just like Shug's repetitive, gradually unfolding composition. It's a fit. He should work with Tim Burton sometime. (Although you did a fine job, director Masako Noda.)

Exit is out in Japan via p-vine, and in the States via Almost Gold.

Nice mix of pop and strangeness in sound. Inspiring, actually.

This is so great. Shugo is awesome! And criminally underappreciated!
