New St. Vincent Video - "Marrow"

thumbnail icon: New St. Vincent Video - "Marrow"

Old folks may be immune to the charms of an Annie Clark closeup, but for everyone else there's this video for "Marrow" in which St. Vincent makes sure to recreate her album covers a lot during a long walk along a dusty road where we witness her pied-piper like effect on the panoply of humanity she passes. The action begins at a makeshift grave and Annie, ever the head turner, strolls past a broken down family, road workers, thugs, cops, and live stock, all of whom are powerless to resist her magnetic pull. And her ability to freeze-frame and rotate the world with the sheer force of her doe-eyed gaze. So much face.

Still hear Dave Matthews Band in the machine gun sax on the hook. Actor is out. Annie's going on tour with Andrew Bird, here's a video performance of them together that teases that trek:

so much face close-up makes me feel like an obvious ploy is working too well on me when i get all woozy over st. vincent, but i can't help it--if i made her giggle like bird does when he starts playing the violin, i'd probably feel like i'd done something very important and significant.

I love & whole-heartedly agree with this comment. I could not have conveyed my own feelings better.

Why? Because she's good-looking? If she weren't as attractive would you write that the video was a vortex of autophobia? :)

can there be something maybe just once ever that she does where her robotic porcelain doll-like grill isn't shoved front and center and magnified and photoshopped?

that shit ain't photo shopped. I met her after a show once and she is really that pretty and unblemished.

ok fine so she looks like a stepford wife in real life too. please, just no more sean-young-blade-runner android close ups for ONE video/album cover/etc. is all i'm saying. maybe i can actually pay attention to the music that way.

There are these new things out I heard of. They're called Mp3s. It's fantastic, you don't have to look at an album cover or a video to listen to music =O

That's her look, that's her style. It's obviously effective since you, among thousands of others, recognize her for it. If you've got a better way to do it, make your own music video with your music. Annie Clark is very in your face with that. Call it narcissism, but I think it's a way of making you face her head on

It really is almost bizarre how clear her skin is in person, even after sweating her brain out from a show..

even though she loves her face a little too much, I'd have to say this video is wayy better than "actor out of work"

She probably didn't direct this video, despite what the MTV music video awards would suggest artists don't really have that much to do with it.

Way to run with the simplest, laziest narrative for a backlash! Do you think she directed the video? It would be nice if you at least TRIED to acquit yourself respectably...or...is this really the best you can do?

H-E-L-P Me.

Dead Weather plays the same day as St. Vincent in New Orleans. I've seen at a St. Vincent at Bonnaroo earlier this year before, but wanted to know if I should skip Dead Weather to see St. Vincent again. Thoughts people?

Respectfully, my thought is that you should make these sort of decisions on your own. Follow your heart, kid.

I went to see St. Vincent over the summer in a tiny dive bar, and there was no way i could've known about the absolute genius of the concert i was about to see. She rocked the fuck out of that show - everything about it was mesmerizing. The lightshow was kickass, her band was TIGHT, and she is just one of the most fascinating and entertaining musicians to watch, and i wouldn't have missed that concert for anything.

So yeah, you should probably just go with the Dead Weather.

Was anyone else hoping that when she turned around to face the people in the hook that they would start doing a choreographed dance? Because that was what I was hoping for.

I was actually hoping that everyone would just explode or turn on each other or at least have an interesting moment to stutter-freeze-frame/bullet-time on. I was really disappointed, because the concept of this video is so cool and its beginning builds such a nice tension. I just wish the payoff would be awesomer.

Annie, you know I'm in love with you. That's a given. And you know I think your face is beautiful, and above all that superficial bullshit, that I think your music is really incredible. Also a given. But these things do not automatically make a good music video.

You deserve a GREAT music video. I can't wait for that to happen when you call me to direct the "The Strangers" video. No? Oh, okay. That's cool too. I still think you're the best.

I don't know if I so much hear Dave Mathew's in the chorus as much as I hear the Liars' "Houseclouds". Everything right down to the keyboard melody break down in the middle. It's almost note for note.

I'm not suggesting she copied, but it always makes me want to go back want listen to the Liars again when I hear it.

The Dave Matthews comparison is ridiculous. What, have you never heard a saxophone in a rock song before that that's your only frame of reference?

So she's supposed to be dead in the video right? ? Like the grave is hers and she is walking around while people are frozen-still because they've just seen the most beautiful ghost ever, right? ?

Btw, a choreographed dance number would've only confused Michael Jackson fans.
