New Tegan & Sara - "Hell"

thubmnail icon: New Tegan & Sara - "Hell"

Our first listen of this track came from Tegan & Sara's recent set at Rifflandia festival, where the sisters Quin debuted Tegan's "Hell," from the album Sainthood, in a church (all non-spiritual coincidences, she insisted). But when it comes to hearing studio work, it's fun stacking initial observations of a band's new material against their Progress Report spin: The Quins insisted Sainthood was "bigger and more forceful ... for the first time ... this is a band record" and credited that to producer Chris Walla's lack of overdubs and Death Cab drummer Jason McGerr's intense drum faces. All of that rings true in "Hell"'s propulsive post-punky opening and pared down, kinetic pop hook. It's track three on the new album, it's catchy, and if you listen hard enough you can hear Jason's facial contortions. And sure enough, it's not spiritual.

Sainthood is out 10/27, and will be available with a three-book box set titled ON / IN / AT. It costs $79.99 and weighs 6lbs. These shows should be fun/ny.

10/25 - Los Angeles, CA @ Orpheum Theater
10/30 - New York, NY @ Town Hall
10/31 - New York, NY @ Town Hall

Sounds better than anything on The Con. I wish there was some higher quality audio out there to listen to.

It is the album version here.

As for me, this sounds good but as a Tegan and Sara fan, it's sounds also a bit commercial.
I expected something more as a first 'single', there's a lake of drums in this track. Has Jason lost is talent?

And Tegan is too 'nice', hoped she'd be more excite or something...
Yet, Alligator (another track in Sainthood) sound very different and GOOD so we'll see! :D

i agree. This is so commercial compared to their other stuff. It IS a Tegan song though. Either way can't wait for the greatness thats to come!

This is tight. Can't wait to see/hear them rock the rest of the new album in LA.

There's another mix floating around that sounds better. The drums are far more featured, for a start. This sounds like a bit of a rough one to me. Great tune though! (Although from the 6 tracks that we've heard so far [live], I'm liking Sara's songs more. I'm usually a bit more torn b/t the two, but "On Directing", "Alligator" and "Red Belt" are all pretty damn impressive.

Yeah I have to agree with you, It's good too because Tegan's always giving Sara shit about no one liking her songs lol. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Yo, Stereogum, pretty sure they're playing 2 shows at the Orpheum. I just bought tickets and it was for the 26th.

Also, I love this song. I've always leaned towards Tegan's songs a bit more so I'm glad she gets the single this time around. Really looking forward to this album.

I Agree. They did a good job shortening Tegan's songs on The Con what happened this time?

Yeah I think the chorus maybe repeats a little too much lol. These words get overused?
