New Vampire Weekend Video - "Cousins"

thumbnail icon: New Vampire Weekend Video - "Cousins"

Following up on our post for "Cousins" The Song, here's "Cousins" the video: The single art's shot of the boys in a long alley doused in confetti fit the song's manically festive, church-belled punk racer, but is pretty much a direct still from the Garth Jennings-direct clip itself, which has the kids trade spaces on a moving platform and at the fringes, on ladders and wearing masks of each other. It's quick, quirky, and unpredictable but not without a sense of humor about itself, so pretty much perfect for a band of Ivy Leaguers who aren't above self-satirizing their prepped up ways. Also, love the colored-tape art by (or inspired by) Brooklyn's Aakash Nihalani. (UPDATE: Nope, not by Aakash. Interesting.)

Contra is out 1/12 via XL. And according to a tip from We All Want Someone, the Japanese version of the LP will feature two bonus tracks in "Ottoman" (also featured on the Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist soundtrack) and "Little Giant," which has been in the band's live rep for awhile. To refresh yourself, it sounds like this:

Yeah it certainly is terrible. As long as we both agree that terrible means "beyond infectiously awesome". Terrible indeed.

This is really the first one that has followed me around whether I wanted it to or not(nice new newyorker cover)...a big dissappointment actually(the video)...It had major comic potential...(crazy cast of characters dancing in supermarket isles...

It's not great but it's not bad. The guitar refrain is pretty catchy though.

I also like this song. It's also hugely different from 'Horchata' which is promising for the rest of the album so I'm still keeping my hopes up for Contra...

this tape art was definitely NOT done by aakash nihalani. Vampire Weekend totally ripped him off (poorly) without consent or compensation. how's that for supporting the arts?

What a rip off, dont buy their music, boycott, they shouldn't steal an artists ideas like that and be able to get away with it!

I like it. It sounds enough like their old stuff that I'm not disappointed, and it sounds different enough that I'm not bored.
Wait they ripped off some obscure visual artist?!?!

What's going on here?? Are we listening to the same track? This stuff is incredible, and who cares if they borrow some small aspect of aakash nihalani's art, who isnt lifting ideas in 2009? You guys are on the wrong page or something...

the music isn't for everyone.

i actually like it a lot compared to their previous stuff (which fyi sounds completely different). And the video is undeniably pretty cool. simple and strange. and sweet.

Didn't Aakash Nihalani rip off Sam Bassett?

Or is it the other way around?

Does it matter?

With all due respect its tape graffiti UNSIGNED put up around cites and just because Nihalani or Bassett put it up in a gallery in Brooklyn last year doesn't mean they invented it.

"A-Punk" may have been the debut's signifier, but it was also its low point. That may be subject to debate, but I think it's pretty clear that this is what that song should have been. The rare, better than the original sequel. Toy Story 2.

I kept waiting for the hook, but it never came. What's the point of Vampire Weekend without the hooks?

Horchata is much better.

Wait, because they used the same medium and style, they are ripping him off? Looks to me like he's ripping the city off by using other people's real estate

Just because they ripped another artist off doesn't mean it doesn't sound good.....so, if you don't want to support them with your money just steal their music like everyone else :D

this song, video, and band are awesome. can't wait for the new album
disliking this band on principle that they are somehow ripping someone off or are "inauthentic" is very very tired and irrational.

I would never go see this band. However, the video and song here
are totally totally, you know, right there.

Majority of people on this website are stuck up hipsters who really believe their music is AMAZING while every newer music is awful. This song is catchy, its poppy, its good for Vampire Weekend. Commenting that you think its awful compared to your favorite indie artist who no one's ever heard of doesn't contribute to anything.
