Oasis On BRIT Awards, LOST

Here is your BRIT Award Outstanding Contribution To Music winner Oasis, both performing and demonstrating the effects of "Cigarettes And Alcohol." Liam Noel says he could be bigger than Elvis if he went solo. Maybe it's time to consider it.

Speaking of Oasis, did anyone catch the short "Wonderwall" bit on LOST last night? Finally, we have an excuse to blog about LOST again. What is up with Desmond, brotha?

This isn't the first Oasis tie-in with the show. I actually wrote a blog pointing out all the Oasis connections in the show yesterday

I see Oasis has gone from ripping off the Beatles to ripping off T Rex.....

Ripping of T-Rex? Like it matters.

Hey Scott, I'm pretty sure that line from "Wonderwall" is apropos of the whole Desmond/Charlie storyline. "And maybe, you're gonna be the one who saves me". So I wouldn't be placing my money on Chucky dying soon.

It's pretty sad that in the state of music today, that a decade old song is the most rocking-est thing out there. Fall out bOy? please.

It's nice to see that Liam's nonchalance has evolved to the point that he doesn't even TRY to sing anymore. Just pushes all the air out of his body via his nose into the microphone.

Enough with this "Oasis is copying The Beatles" shit. Oasis stole more from the Sex Pistols and T-Rex than the Beatles.

And Lost last night? Easily one of the best ever.

Ummmm....I was just trying to prove how hip and up-to-date I was...y'know, not being familiar with anything a decade old....yeah, that's it.....

Matt, when the band themselves have admitted to ripping off the Beatles time and time again it makes the whole subject somewhat moot. They've knicked songtitles, lyrics & even basslines from the Fab Four. If they were still good no one would care. Since they've failed to do anything remotely intresting since their second album, this subject will continue to come up.

Yea, the last two episodes of Lost have been fantastic. Such a huge improvement over the beginning of the season. There's no reason to not be blogging about it at this point

sean since you are the oasis expert name a song oasis has stolen from the beatles. they have the same haircuts and they said they were going to be bigger than the beatles which they were in the UK.

Beetlebum, I said the band has REPEATEDLY admitted to ripping off the Beatles sound. I didn't say they'd specifically ripped off a certain song, I said "They've knicked songtitles, lyrics & even basslines..." But if you want examples of them nicking elements of songs:

1)'Supersonic' used George Harrison's solo on 'My Sweet Lord'.
2)'Cigarettes & Alcohol' ripped T Rex (which Noel admitted)
3)'Shakermaker' blatantly ripped off 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing'.
4)'Wonderwall' was named for a George Harrison album.
5)'Hello' was built on the framework of a Gary Glitter song, but at least they had permission to use it.
6)'Step Out' had to be removed from 'Morning Glory' because it ripped off Stevie Wonder and he threatened to sue.
7)'Do Y'Know What I Mean' uses lyrics referencing the Beatles, the morse code in the background translates to "Strawberry Fields Forever" and in a truly amazing example of self-parody they steal their own guitar chords from 'Wonderwall'.
8)'All Around The World' features backing vocals remarkably similar to the corresponding section in "Hey Jude". Not to mention the fact that the video is a clear homage to 'Yellow Submarine'.
9)It's pointless to even recount all the instances of Noel or Liam proclaiming their adoration for the Beatles & John Lennon since it happened nearly every time they were interviewed. Not to mention Liam's tendancy early on to wear glasses identical in appearance to John Lennon's.

If you honestly can't admit that to yourself, I don't know what to tell you.

And to say they were EVER bigger than the Beatles ANYWHERE is simply false. Oasis overall sales are somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 million worldwide; the Beatles had beaten that # by 1966. Hell, even U2 has that beat. If you're referring to live performances, it's hardly a fair comparison as the Beatles stopped performing live before they'd even reached the peak of their fame. So let's just let that myth go, shall we?

What's funny is, I loved the band initially. It's just that subsequent to 'What's the Story?' they've released a steady stream of crap.

Look, Sean, you dick. I hate to come in here sounding like a dick myself, but your argument is crap.

Beetlebum said he wanted you to name a song that Oasis stole from the Beatles. I am going to post a simple rebuttal to the 9 points you made:

1) A George Harrison song - NOT THE BEATLES
2) NOT THE BEATLES
3) NOT THE BEATLES
4) NOT THE BEATLES
5) NOT THE BEATLES
6) NOT THE BEATLES
7) NOT THE BEATLES
8) NOT THE BEATLES
9) NOT THE BEATLES

Okay yes, maybe Oasis took a riff from T-Rex (whoever the hell they are) and Gary Glitter and so on, but apart from the fact that that is a completely different topic to the question you were asked, who cares.

Oasis paid homage to the Beatles, they did not use any of their songs. Admittedly they have played some Beatles songs live (Helter Skelter, Hide Your Love Away) but bands cover the Beatles all the time, and Oasis made their name of their own accord.

So in conclusion, get over it, and if you're going to rant, at least make it relevant to the topic matter.

Beetlebum - good on you.
Sean - learn to argue.

when are ppl like mamo gona open there eyes & realise that 90% of bands that are big out there nowadays have ripped of anyting original & decent since the early 90's. beetlebum gave u enuff,if ur still so blind as to see that oasis didnt utterly rip off the beatles in every respect then your a fool! & you deserve to be living in a world where shit pub bands such as oasis are superstars

What Beatles songs did Oasis rip off? I honestly can't think of anything they ripped off that wasn't from The Fab Four's solo careers.

With that in mind,

The opening piano bit of "Don't look back in anger" came from Lennon's "Imagine"
The main riff/solo of "Supersonic" came from Harrison's "My Sweet Lord"

Those are the only two I can think of right now. But honestly, who gives a shit? Who hasn't ripped off The Beatles? As a musician (songwriter, lead guitar player, etc), I can safely admit that I've ripped them off myself.
