Old Folks Review Animal Collective

thubmnail icon: Old Folks Review Animal Collective

When you combine elderly people and indie rock, you get hilarious memes. That's just science. Scrapple.tv's Breakfast At Sulimay's is a Web video series in which three seasoned listeners critique a wide range of recent tracks at a Philadelphia diner. It's been around for several years (here they review the Thermals' "Pillar Of Salt") but is all over my RSS this week since the kids at Collected Animals caught the "My Girls" segment in Episode 16. Ann, Joe, and Bill are not fans. "This group is not gonna get very far from Baltimore, Maryland."

First up is Young Jeezy. AC comes two minutes in...

If you like that, you'll love "The Real Housewives Of New York Noise" reviewing the "Water Curses" video.

Grandmas say the darnedest things.

Of course old folks won't like MPP, ataris were past beyond their youth! Play them Crystal Castles or any other bands doing the 8-bit thing, they'll say the same.

i really liked the social commentary of the old man about the rapper and the "Ghetto Connection". Spot on old folk!

NOTHING is as repetitive as Animal Collective. God, I hate this band. I don't know what it says that I agree with a bunch of old folks, but man, I don't care. I don't get how anyone can physically handle the experience of listening to MPP.

Yeah, Brian, sing it! Animal Collective suck, and "My Girls" is a horrendously repetitive pointless piece of shit. I know they're very old people, but this is the general reaction you'd get from the average human being if you played them Animal Collective. I wish "the blogosphere" would go outside and get out of their insular, confused shitworld. The end.

Haha, what is really sad is that i agree with the old woman! I like Animal Collectives sound, but every damn song is like 2-3 minutes too long. its just so much repetition in all their songs. they need to take a Ramones mindset and start kicking out like 1:30 to 3:00 tracks. in that much time, repetition is ok. thats what the Ramones proved.

Posted by: Brian at 03/10/09 9:52 PM  | Reply

eh? I personally think the repetition/repetition in each song is awesomely Animal Collective. And it makes me listen to the whole album straight through ('cause its that good) and not go back and listen to the same 1:55 song over and over and over. I guess its not good or bad, but its Animal Collective.

Dude. These guys rule .Go to their website - they have reviews of The Walkmen, Danielson, Ting Tings, Sepultura, Bjork, Cold War Kids, Beck and Kings of Leon. You'll be surprised. It's also cool just to see how far removed from 1930s-1940s culture we are. These guys are baffled by a simple fuzzed guitar talking about white noise as if they've heard it for the first time. Makes you think how far we've come since Psychocandy in the 1980s :) very cool.

Repetition = Bad?

As if Dean Martin, country western, and swimg music weren't repetitious. Good music has repetitive themes. Period.

And this iis nothing more than the primordial old not understanding the young. Someday my grandkids will like some absolutely amazing band, but it will be all lost on me as I just ramble on about thin mints and how they don't make good music anymore. Back in my day we had Animal Collective... now that was how music was meant to be made.
