Paul Rudd Shows Veronica Mars His Pretty Pony

Reader Rebecca writes in:

Paul Rudd has his own tag on the Gum, so he's relevant, right?

Anyway, he guest-starred on last night's episode of Veronica Mars as a washed-up, drunk asshole musician who was the non-legendary (read: still-alive) half of a fictitious '90s rock duo. The episode features Rudd skinny-dipping in the ocean and playing guitar, keys and singing. Apparently Rudd is good friends with the creator, Rob Thomas, and a few writers and producers on the show.
While we don't get a sample of My Pretty Pony's finest in this clip, we do get some hits-close-to-home indie geek-off and Paul "More Than A Feeling" Rudd generally being awesome.

You can get a peek at Paul strumming out some of My Pretty Pony's finest by heading here and clicking the "Interviews" tab on the left. Paul says his character Desmond Fellows is not unlike Andrew Ridgeley. With a massive drinking problem. (He also makes a character comparison to Peter O'Toole, and says his real life is like a George Winston record, all within two minutes. There's gotta be points in that.)

And speaking of indie rock loving comedians. David Cross was on Law & Order: Criminal Intent last night ... playing a character based on Howard K. Stern (to Kristy Swanson's Anna Nicole.) Fortunately, he didn't sing.

The fake music video clip they showed made it seem like his band was a mix between They Might Be Giants and The Posies, although I read somewhere that one of the songs he did last night was actually a Cotton Mather cover.

Yeah, the one he played at the end, and the one in the news clip were both Cotton Mather. I do believe Rob Thomas loves them - they are used a lot in the show.

I guess Ken Marino's (The State) got a role on VM--he and Rudd have shared more than a bit of screen time in the past, from Wet, Hot American Summer to Diggers to the upcoming The Ten.

I've never really sat down and watched the show, but I might now in hopes of seeing a cameo by the Stella fellas. Maybe David Wain'll be brought in to sniff out a missing fake leg.

raw:

Yeah, Ken Marino's been a recurring character since season one. He plays a sleazy rival PI in town.

I definitely recommend the show to anyone who hasn't seen it before (in addition to witty writing, the show has interesting mysteries and good musical choices), but I would suggest starting with the season 1 DVDs -- I hate to say it, but the show is not as good as it was before.

I immediately thought of They Might Be Giant's sound when I saw the episode and the My Pretty Pony video. On the podcast corresponding to this VM episode, the director notes that the look of the faux band was based on Trip Shakespeare.

I agree -- start with Season 1 and watch it in secession. That's how I got hooked. Ditto on the love for Rebecca and the whole Cho's Pizza podcast crew.
