Pete Doherty Sings Nazi Anthem At German Fest Doherty, whose mom is of Jewish descent, was dragged off stage in Munich this past weekend by on3-radio festival organizers after he tore into the first stanza of "Das Deutschlandlied," Nazi Germany's national anthem. Stay classy at The Daily Swarm

Does Pete know his history? ? Coming from someone of Jewish descent makes this ten times worse. Stick to your music dude.

I'm Jewish, but I'm not offended because I'm reasonably sure that Mr. Doherty is a just an utter trainwreak rather than a Nazi sympathizer... though of course I one hundred percent agree that it was beyond inappropriate and he completely deserved to be hauled off.

It's so frustrating to see someone who once upon a time made two really great (in my opinion, anyway) albums just continue to sink lower and lower.

Pretty sure if the crowd was yeling at him and booing then thats the que to stop playing the F-ing song. He doesn't have alot of credibility, knowing his past, and trying to have a rebuttal is kinda ridiculous at this point.

But i agree with lily on this one, hes a trainwreck, and probably has no idea what hes doing at this point in his life, but that doesn't mean he can do whatever the hell he feels like.

strange thing to read about. The Libertines played 'Rock Against Racism' and I believe Babyshambles has too. Doherty is a lot of things, but I can't believe he's even remotely sympathetic to Nazis. My guess is he was going for irony and failed or he was just so smashed he didn't know up from down (not that the latter is an excuse).

My first thoughts weren't that he was a Nazi sympathize, it seems like he was just trying to piss off the crowd. Totally tasteless.

if you read the full article its only the first verse of the anthem that is banned. he was singing the full anthem. i'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didnt know any better. i reckon he likes herion more than nazis.

look, I'm usually the last to sympathize with this douchbag. but how can people be so dumb as to think he was actually singing this to be pro-nazi? I mean really, try harder people. it's just obviously in very bad taste and that's why he was thrown off the stage.

Pete Doherty is an epic douchebag, but the song is not the "nazi anthem." It was chosen as Germany's national anthem during the Wiemar Republic, who the Nazis systematically eliminated. The song is also not titled "Deutschland Uber Alles."
Stay totally reactionary Stereogum ;)

agreed. pretty weak research, stereogum, pretty weak. that song is not the nazi national anthem and it's called "das deutschlandlied".

this is obviously very stupid but it's a lot like all the bands playing cbgbs in the 70s with the swastika on their sleeves. designed to piss people off and be anti-p.c., but certainly not pro-nazi. of course cbgbs wasn't in munich but you know.

What are you lot arguing about?
Pete sang a Nazi anthem. That's how Der Spiegel characterized it, they would know.
Whether he was intentionally trying to offend is a different story. That's between him and whatever substances he was abusing at the time.

I'm sure if we saw a translation of the lyrics it wouldn't be offensive. Somewhat of a poor choice, but I'm sure songs from the Confederate South are still played.

P.S. One of his songs is "Arbeit Macht Frei".

I'm not sure of Doherty's intentions here, but first of all, Deutschlandlied is not the Nazi Anthem: It is still very much the national anthem of Germany. 'Germany, Germany above all', back when it was written, expressed a desire to unite the German Confederation. The Horst-Wessel-Lied was written by a Nazi activist made into a martyr by the Nazi propagandists and was sung after the first stanza of Deutschlandlied. Today they only sing the third stanza not because the first stanza is racist but because it's jingoism outdated by a century. Nietzsche called it the dumbest phrase in the world. So maybe he is just dumb and maybe not racist?

Pete looked & sounded under the influence of some chemicals,I dont know the dude so maybe he's always like that, poor singing, lazy playing. It appears as if he knew what he was doing though, the crowd was.nt giving him the feedback he wanted so pete started to push their buttons and knew that verse would get some reaction & did;nt care what that reaction would be.He was rightly pulled off stage for bad taste & poor choices, nobody wanted to hear that crap.

He sings rock n roll and if you've noticed anything about rock n roll and their singers they tend to feel it neccesary to push people's buttons. I think it was pretty rad that he had the balls to do that, who cares if some people couldn't handle their own past. The Germans are way overally sensitive about anything nazi (as you could imagine) so I say push their buttons more. rock on doherty

How can you all be so stupid as to not realize he was doing this to piss off the German people? Do you really think he did this as a pro Nazi Stance? What are you retarded. I've read like 30 posts of people saying they can't believe he would do this. He was obviously trying to get back at the German people for Nazism.

@ Adam: that was 60 years ago asshole. It's been illegal in Germany for a long time to even possess Nazi paraphernalia, and lots of German people monitor fascist groups there and report Nazi activity to authorities. German people want to move on, and they should be able to. Hardly any adults living in German then are still living now. Or can you not fucking add and subtract?

People can argue and overlook this thing way to much but hes not trying to get back at anybody and if he was, he failed...badly. I imagine the people booing and yelling are of nazi decent or jewish decent, regardless its offensive to the people in germany, and this generation needs to learn to respect what happen.

i wonder why people are so hasty on judging him for an obvious misunderstanding, just because the guy has a tendency of being a fuck up on other innofensive matters. i think everybody can agree now that he wasn't singing the nazi anthem, that he is not sympathetic to nazism or racism.

he just sang an outdated version of germany's national anthem, whose first verse carries an amount of controversy within germany (the ubber alles line).

what is sad is that after 60 years, good willing nice respectful german people (or sympathetic strangers) still cannot express love and pride for their own country (like everyone else in other countries do) without being called a nazi instantly.

and that people who doesn't even bother to try to check the accuracy of the news they read get to write offensive messages about stuff they know almost nothing about just because they are not fans of a guy they don't even know or have ever met (which is very close to a fascist behaviour).

i seriously doubt he did it to sympathize with nazis, more likely he did it to create a reactionary situation with people who are very sensitive about their history. celebration of naziism is totally taboo in germany.
