Peter Bjorn & John Get Interfaced

thumbnail icon: Peter Bjorn & John Get Interfaced

PB&J's experiment with keyboards, samples, and drum pads on Living Thing met mixed reception, although I found a lot to love about the record's stronger tracks. Underneath the electronic cloak they're still one of the savviest and most effortlessly pop-smart bands around, so hearing their sticky melodies twisted into new shapes was a welcome break from their previous (awesome) incarnation. The new gear does come with its objective downfalls, though, namely when it takes your sound men an eternity to figure out the wires and you delay everyone's SXSW night by an hour. That shit was incredibly frustrating, and Brandon and I didn't get to see much of their set because the tech difficulties didn't get much better when they finally started playing. I don't know how long it took them to set up in the AOL studios for this interface, but be thankful these clips are edited to just the performance part. You'll find the album's finest below: the galloping "Is It Your Past," the late night dance of "It Don't Move Me," and the previously posted "Lay It Down" along with a ballsier take on "Nothing To Worry About."

"Nothing To Worry About"

"Lay It Down"

"Just The Past"

"It Don't Move Me"

All those come via Spinner, where you can watch an interview with the band. This is a good remix:

Check the boys on tour, many opening for Depeche Mode. Pray that they have better sound men than at SXSW.

I didn't enjoy this album even after cutting its crusts off.

i really dug writer's block, but didn't feel this one. the single is trying too hard, which totally ignores the success of "young folks," a song that gained its success from its poppy simplicity. and from these videos, the songs don't seem to be all too mesmerizing live, either. bummer.

I think the album's awesome, much more interesting than writer's block. Their live thing is a lot more interesting now too. I think the songs are great

I wish they had combined their efforts from Seaside Rock and Living Thing into one solid record. Not a huge fan of the new album but I saw them last night at the Hard Rock in Times Square and they sound really really good live.
