Radiohead Play "These Are My Twisted Words" Live For The First Time

thumbnail icon: Radiohead Play "These Are My Twisted Words" Live For The First Time

Upon the track's official release on Monday, Jonny wrote that the band would "probably" play "These Are My Twisted Words" at this summer's concerts. And sure enough Radiohead kicked off the encore to their first ever Austrian show Friday with the new non-album, non-EP single. A fan at the 2009 Frequency Festival in St. Poelten captured it for posterity:

Setlist
01 "15 Step"

02 "There There"

03 "Airbag"

04 "All I Need"

05 "Kid A"

06 "The National Anthem"
07 "Nude"

09 "The Gloaming"

10 "Myxomatosis"

11 "Climbing Up The Walls"

12 "Street Spirit (Fade Out)"

13 "Videotape"

14 "Jigsaw Falling Into Place"

15 "Karma Police"

16 "Bodysnatchers"

17 "Idioteque"

18 "These Are My Twisted Words"

19 "Pyramid Song"

20 "Reckoner"

21 "(Nice Dream)"

22 "Paranoid Android"

Radiohead have gigs in Prague (8/23) and Poznan (8/25) before next weekend's Leeds & Reading sets. Then the Internets will will a new album into existence probably.

You know what, I don't care if ed's not doing anything.
If he just stands there in that sexy cocksure pose all song long, it works for me.

Yeah, when I read that, I was thinking, "Damn, it must be nice to be in a band that can put together a setlist like that!"
I mean, its not a greatest hits, but it also contains a little something for everyone and no filler really.
One could make an argument against "The Gloaming" but when I saw them do that song it was a highlight so shush.

When I saw them play live it was pretty much that exact same set-list minus Gloaming and Words. Then add Dollars & Cents, Optimistic, Fake Plastic Trees, and Exit music. Fuck I want to roll the clock back to May '08. That was splendid.

If they would've played Dollars & Cents instead of The Gloaming, then it would have been a perfect set-list. Thom looks happy to be playing new music.

ed is probably pretty mad. This is a guitar based song and he still isn't playing. I'm afraid he's going to quit the band.

I think hearing the song live has greatly improved the song for me. The background projection is wonderful.

I was at the festival and I think Radiohead was a bit restrained in their performance and execution. Maybe it was their performing of new songs in front of a live audience that made for that feeling. This was my 7th time seeing them live and I would put it as my 5th or 6th best Radiohead concert. "These Are My Twisted Words" did sound much better than I could have imagined compared to their proper single release, and I am hoping they manage to capture that sound and atmosphere better in another studio recording of the track, perhaps for a future LP (although there were those words Thom said about not wanting to do a proper full length record.) Johnny's guitar was a bit off tune as well during "Reckoner" and I also noticed the Ed appearing a bit bored and bothered as erikl noted above with the lack of bass parts. I'm not sure if maybe they're tired and stretched following all the attention they get with every musical move they make, but something was off during their performance at Frequency. Me thinks that the lacking to commit to anything immediate or full length is just the boys buying time before a drastic change is made within the band, better or for worse.

Have they farted recently too? Did one of the fans bottle it? It is filmed over at YouTube? Can you download it? Can you tell us every single movement and thought of Ed, Thom and co. for the next fortnight in miniscule detail, I'm sure we all really want to know.

No.

I mean it's so unusual for a band to play a new song in a set isn't it? *eyeroll* FFS.

It's the first performance of the song, EVER. Fans would be interested in watching it, surely.

Kind of weird, but at around 2:40-2:45, it looks like Colin reaches for something with his right hand, but the bass line keeps playing... Anyone have any explanation?

I don't think there was a bass line there, Thom and Johnny were both playing guitar, with Thom playing what you're maybe mistaking for bass. As for whomever's speculating that Ed's pissed because he's not playing guitar here, his role with the band has always been to add flourishes and extra guitar on the songs. This one is no different; when the sound gets bigger near the end everyone's playing.

Does Colin have his bottle or the infamous lemon shaker in the beginning? Or am I seeing things?

I think the bass was taking away from his vocals. Just turn it down a bit.

0.28 - 0.35: every band needs a Status Quo moment :)

the day i never hear about radiohead again will, honestly, be a good day. no disrespect intended to their fans. but a more over-rated band, to my taste, exists not. yes, it's subjective
