Randy Newman's Totally Appropriate, Political Macworld Performance

Yesterday's Apple post included news that Randy Newman closed the Macworld keynote address with a bit of "You've Got A Friend In Me." Which is true enough, but before he got to the Toy Story fluff, Randy felt he had to say "A Few Words In Defense Of Our Country." Not to get all Seth and Amy, but ... really? We know it's an election year and musicians aren't shy about their opinions on government but really, Randy? 'Cause for a second there we almost thought this was a technology address, focused on laptops and smart phones and not on your personal politics, predictions, or ability to namedrop fascist regimes. At about 6:20 he shifts gears and begins talking about Pixar and his soundtrack work but ... really.

Stevie looks thrilled!

Production meeting backstage:

"Soooo...we have 10 minutes we need to fill at the end of the presentation. I'm think Keynote presentation."

"Guys- I've got an idea. Brace yourself...let's let Randy Newman ramble on incoherently for 10 minutes!"

"You had me at Randy!"

At least he didn't launch into a version of "Rednecks," although the stunned look on all the geeks' faces would have been a good laugh.

Does stereogum really give a shit if a musician is using his platform (regardless of what it is) to say what he wants? Really? Really, stereogum? Should he be playing a song about macbooks and cellphones? Grow up and stop preaching to us about what is appropriate. You don't have to prove how moderate you are by being the rebel rebels.

Au contraire, mon frere. I for one am so sick and goddamned tired of musicians and actors deigning to tell everyone else what to think politically. It's about time Stereogum and others called these pinheads what they are: babbling pieces of crap that can't think of anything better to do. At best. I'm lookin' at you, Sheryl One-Sheet Crow. STFU!

You guys are idiots. Why don't you talk about oberst performing at obama rallies (supposed to be about politics!) or the boss performing at an edwards rally, etc.

Randy needs to lose 120 pounds, buy glasses, and play shitty synths. Then you'd LOVE him.

why does he need to buy glasses?

Or he could gain a little more weight, buy glasses, play some synths and be just like Dan Deacon. Than he would gain some hipster cred.

Although I have nothing against a political song, it did seem a little misplaced at the keynote. And no we didnt need to be "playing a song about macbooks and cellphones". Just, you know, MUSIC music would of been nice though.

Plus guys it was the #2 single of the year! Don't you guys read Rolling Stone?

Glad to see someone else noticed too. I recognize without reservation Randy Newman's right to speak his convictions, but IMHO seemed like the Stevenote was hardly the time or place for it?

Who cares if one hit wonder Randy (I thought he was dead) Newman spews his lefty venom? I don't unless it's at a Apple Keynote address. The liberals can rant all they want at the right time and place; hell, they have lost several elections doing this, keep it up!
I will never ever again lead my friends in hand to the Apple Store...NEVER!
What a stupid unforgivable moronic prank, maturity level of a 7th grader.
Apple, you lost a longtime friend!

The truth is sure hard to take for some folks. Good job, Jobs! (And Randy.)

If Apple is so anti-American as to allow this political rant, why not choose another market to sell Macs-say China where most of the manufacturing work is actually done for Apple? Steve Jobs made several word stumbles during the keynote and he's NEVER done that. Maybe he's not well!
