Record Shoppers' Non Kanye/Curtis Buyer's Guide

Kanye's indie banner-waving and iconic photoshoot recreations made him and his 50 Cent sales showdown difficult to avoid, we know. But aside from the inevitable, forthcoming post about Curtis's concession speech (and subsequent renege on his retirement vow), it's safe to say you're in the clear -- it's over. Also, as likely you've read but haven't seen/heard, Kanye's relationship with MTV is over, too...

But we digress -- this one's for the artists with 9/11 releases that don't necessarily have the promo budget/foresight to concoct a headline grabbing "rivalry." Avey, Panda, Deakin, and the Geologist's excellent Jam is the obvious highlight, but there's plenty more worth noting, including LPs from Alberta Cross, Black Lips, Black Francis, The Go! Team, Modeselektor, etc. After the jump, a stab at a comprehensive second-week-of-September record buyer's guide.

Alberta Cross - The Thief & the Heartbreaker
Amber (Danish alt-rock trio) - One Minute Love Affair
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
Ann Wilson - Hope & Glory
B5 - Don't Talk, Just Listen
Black Francis - Bluefinger
Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil
Bizzy Bone - Trials & Tribulations
Kenny Chesney - Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates
Vic Chesnutt - North Star Deserter
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True: Deluxe Edition
Deadly Syndrome - The Ortolan
Ani DiFranco - Canon
Enuff Z'nuff - Tonight - Sold Out
40 Cal. (of The Diplomats) - Broken Safety 2
The Go! Team "Proof of Youth
Grand National - A Drink and a Quick Decision
Joe Henry - Civilians
The Holloways - So This Is Great Britain?
Hot Hot Heat - Happiness Ltd.
Jupiter Rising - Electropop
Brian Kent - Breathe Life
Scott Matthews - Passing Stranger
Modeselektor - Happy Birthday!
Orange - Escape From L.A.
Para One - Epiphanie
Pinback - Autumn of the Seraphs
Pitch Black - Revenge
The Proclaimers - Life With You
Qui (fronted by David Yow, formerly of Jesus Lizard) Love's Miracle
Johnathan Rice - Further North
Henry Rollins - A Rollins In The Wry (2001 album)
Shout Out Louds - Our Ill Wills
Simian Mobile Disco - Attack Decay Sustain Release
Taken By Trees Open Field
The Bends - The Bends
Various Artists - Grey's Anatomy, Vol. 3
Various Artists - Sowing the Seeds: The 10th Anniversary
Various Artists - The Anthems 07
Chris Volz - Redemption
X-Press 2 - Makeshift Feelgood

Who you buying/downloading? Since we're sure to have missed a few, feel free to update the list with those we overlooked. As if we have to ask.

Rogue Wave's new album Asleep at Heaven's Gate is available on itunes today. Not sure if it's available in stores yet. I'm amazed by the lack of coverage it's getting, especially after their last album was the underdog quality album of the month it came out.

"Yeah, down with this hip-hop garbage!" I say as I kick off my slip on vans and cycle through the latest Stereogum and p4k postings, sprawled out on my ergonomic bamboo recliner, positioned perfectly in front of my brand new 24 inch iMac. I'm so looking forward to this new animal collective album that these jeans I bought in the girl section of the dept. store, can barely hold back my sexually inadequate package! God, I can't wait to go down to the local cafe and discuss Dostoevsky and high brow politics over free-trade coffee brews, as I analyze the inner workings of this independent music masterpiece, that must've been created by God himself.

I will definitely be adding it to my iTunes Playlist "Too Cool For School" so I can blast out the equally amazing beauties Art Brut, Asobi Seksu, Interpol, The National, Arcade Fire & Beirut, all while watching Flight of the Conchords and munching my delicious vegan sandwiches, which are composed only of local ingredients gathered from within a 30-mile radius.

I totally forgot Bluefinger was coming out today. I'll probably pick that up and hope it doesn't suck like I do with everything Frank Black Francis puts out. Animal Collective's album I'm listening to and it's phenomenal. I'm probably going to look into Modeslektor and Simian Mobile disco as they're both artists I've been hearing about a lot of late. Finally, I know I'll probably end up picking up Kanye's album at some point like I usually do. He's pretty much the biggest douchebag in music, but the man makes some enjoyable hip hop.

Kanye West isn't being a whiney bitch. Most likely, he's tired of how MTV treats artists, like jokes and playthings. I can't say it from experience, but I'm pretty sure being up for something you put your all into year after year and then losing to shit like "My Humps" has to be frustrating. I'm glad he's actually lashing out at MTV. People might be suprised by how much they bully the industry. You know all those snippets of songs they use in their shows? Any normal show, with the exception of news programs, has to pay to use a song. Not MTV though. They, in basic terms, tell labels that if they aren't allowed to use something for free then they'll black list not only the artist, but the entire label.

Fuckin' internet, dude can't even blow off steam without someone recording it and broadcasting it.

i just dont get why hes getting all worked up about, its a fucking vma award, who gives a shit if they give it to something like "My Humps" then it cant be that prestigous, and since when does MTV have to be the pinnacle of success? I get why hes pissed, i guess he really wanted to be honored for the album but if it was the album of the year like he said shouldnt that be enough for him?

It's purely a matter of respect. Kanye's is also addressing a larger problem. MTV used to be about music. Yes, I recognize this phrase has been used so many times its lost meaning, but it's true. There was a time when the channel actually respected the artists they played. These days, artists are simply there for MTV to exploit. Kanye probably remembers the day when the VMA's actually gave out real awards for real categories.

While the VMA's may not be the most important award and the show may not draw people like it used to, he channel itself really is a barometer of culture. What did the VMA's say about art an culture? "Shut up while these commercials play." It was a complete show of how the dynamic and priorities of pop culture have shifted. It's nice to see someone back out of bowing to MTV's hold, even outwardly criticizing them. The fact that that program was even allowed on TV is astonishing. Apart from lukewarm talent, there were so many fireable offenses in the production department it was almost unbelievable. It showed that we'll allow any mediocre bullshit onto our airwaves. Even shitty things in the past got mics to work, played the right songs with the right videos and told presenters what to do before they were handed the mic.

Kanye's pissed because everyone likes respect when they do a good job. In fact, this may go to show that its still not about making money for him. He's in it to make good music that people like, and he wants to be recognized for that. So maybe he should chill about the VMA itself, but he's got a right to any tirade about MTV he wants to give.

Stopping home on a whim before hitting up the record shop, I find my free parking across the street from my building tainted with newly minted parking meters.

NOOOO! Suddenly I'm forced to pay $150 a month to park anywhere within 2 miles of my building. But relevantly sad, is that my CD buying budget went out the drain.

This may have been the first week in 4 or 5 years that I planned to purchase at least 6 CDs in one fell swoop. (most of which I'd had for months)

Now it's like if God wants the music industry to fail (come to think of it, it's been seeming like that for a while)

And for the record it was to go as follows:

Animal Collective
Kanye
Go! Team
Simian Mobile Disco
Black Lips
and Manu Chao (a week late, but still awesome)

What if miseducation doesn't want to ride a bike? I had to stop riding my bike to work because it was too hot and I would sweat in my work clothes and not smell particularly fresh with clients. Taking a little sink shower and changing into work clothes when you get to the office isn't worth riding a bike, it's a hassle.

I recommend the Deadly Syndrome album. It's pretty quality through-and-through. And I feel very confident in claiming that it's better than vol. 3 of Grey's Anatomy, based just on the fact that it will never force me to think of the name McSteamy.
