Saturday Night Live Sees Spoon Go Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Presents Kevin Federline's Parenting Tips

SNL will probably take a few cracks to top last week's Kanye cameoing fun, though the Seth Rogen/Spoon ep had its moments. Like Seth and Kristin Wiig's annoying-child cover of Winehouse's "Rehab." And every moment of the Douchebag Of The Year Awards (and their commemorative Jared Leto trophy). The rest of the show's iffy sketches (and a few too many MacBruber sketches) meant it'd be easier for Spoon to shine, which they did on horny Ga⁵ tracks "The Underdog" and "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb." Both came off pretty well, save a little Britt chord flub at 1:40, on the heels of a cool melody-phrasing improv. It can't all be wedding cake.

"You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" after the jump, along with Kevin Federline's three lessons for parents aspiring to step to his parental awesomeness, as confirmed by being granted custody over his kids.

"Finally after two years in court, it's official: Kevin Federline is slightly more responsible than Britney Spears."

Speaking of Samberg shorts, no doubt you've heard that Andy, Akiva, Jorma and NBC goofed pulling together the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad love letter "Iran So Far Away" when they somehow forgot to clear the Aphex Twin "Avril 14th" sample. NBC's goof is YouTube's gain (as they're not policing its viral dissemination), but mostly we just wanna give mad propers to commenter gl0tch for being the first on the internet to call it. Well done! You win the right to sample Aphex Twin and potentially be sued by Richard D. James himself.

The Spoons, they are terrific.

Is it just me or does Britt Daniel have the air of someone who thinks he's already a rock star or at least SHOULD be? Never mind the flub, or that this song sees them apeing mid 70's Chicago (!!!!) I just don't get it. That said, I think everyone would enjoy a nice little Spoon mix-tape or greatest hits package but let's be clear about opne thing:
To quote Mojo Nixon: Britt Daniel "has no Elvis in him"

I'd say that if you sell over 100k records and appear on national television in a rock band, that in fact, one has achieved rock stardom.

To answer your question Allen:

Yes, it is just you. A great band puts out several quality albums and earns themselves a small place in America's pop culture through talent and hard work. They make it on SNL and put on a cool performance of a nice pop song.

Poor Allen, the phrase "wildly off the mark" doesn't even begin to describe your post

I made a poll: Who's funnier? Samberg doing Kfed or Kfed doing Kfed? (click on my name to vote)

Isn't FedEx an exclusively Stereogum joke?

^ haa -- totally coined FedEx in that post, although the AP ran an article using it a day or two afterwards ... at which point it became the world's joke, ripe for a Samberg retread nearly a year later. as we say, "there's no such thing as exclusives, only premieres" ;) good memory though, Finch!

Allen;
You do, indeed, fail to get it. Confidence has many causes, and comes in many guises.

weird. i thought this week's episode was much funnier and consistent than the opener. and the whole point of the macgruber sketches is that they continue and progress throughout the episode...probably will forte's best.

it was a bummer that the sound was so bad for spoon...that rack tom is so freaking loud...it's really distracting...you don't notice it as much on youtube, but on tv it stuck out like a sore thumb.

and i'm not sure what you meant by "cool melody-phrasing improv." it sounded like the standard version to me..

Having seen Brit many times over the years I was always struck by how much of a rock star he seemed even when Spoon was still mostly unknown. But that's a good thing. I'm sick of musicians who act like they're being forced to play to adoring fans. Brits the balls and he's known it for years.
