She & Him Perform On MTV Canada

thumbnail icon: She & Him Perform On MTV Canada

Last week Matt Ward and Zooey Deschanel made their way to Toronto to play a free show for an MTV Canada audience. There are no cartoon ghosts (or LL Cool Js) in their performance of some Volume One songs ("You Really Got A Hold On Me," "Black Hole," and "Change Is Hard"), but there are plenty of dramatic faces from both M & Z. She's looking more comfortable behind the microphone. He's looking kinda restless, but then he always seems a tad antsy during these She & Him things.

"You Really Got A Hold On Me"

"Black Hole"

"Change Is Hard"

You can see them live for real:

Well she sounds better than she has on other live videos I've seen. She just so so uncomfortable it makes me uncomfortable.

I really don't get why everyone was flipping out about the uncomfortable thing. She sounds great and better than a lot of acts out there right now.

she doesn't make me uncomfortable. she's a babe and she has a killer voice. i can't ask for much else.

what do you want her to do? do-si-do with m. ward?

She might be looking more comfortable but she's still really lethargic and conservative and singing with a method all the time. It's getting old to me.

thank goodness for mtv live.
the only show that still seems to have good, new, bands playing.
and i'm not even talking about she & him, they've had so many great bands from just around toronto and the rest of canada who otherwise wouldn't ever be playing on tv.
reminds me of much music when they were good in the 90s.
the rest of mtv's lineup sucks but, so long as they keep mtv live on, i'm happy.

canada = medical marijuana, socialized medicine, decent tv

why do people move to the united states again?

she has a killer voice but i see what you guys mean by looking uncomfortable, or maybe its more like she just appears rather bored or something, like "well i guess ill go preform these damn songs," it also might be nice if she looked at the audience about half as much as she looks at Ward.

normally i would say watching them perfom is nowhere near uncomfortable, but this certainly was. she just seems so awkward, at least during "you really got a hold on me." it's like she doesn't know where to look so she looks in a million different directions, and her body language is awkward as well. this performance is a lot different then the one i saw on Jimmy Kimmel, which was great. But they do sound pretty tight here.

Ugh, I give up. I've tried so hard to like this band but they're just dull dull dull. I got exactly 32 seconds into the first video before giving up. So bland and lifeless.

I have to say, these performances took place a few hours before the live show I attended... and I think what makes her seem so stiff is she knows she's being filmed live. She's soooo much more laid back and outgoing during a live performance that isn't being filmed. Odd, I know, considering she's like the Queen of Indies. But I couldn't help but notice myself how awkward she seems. THAT.... I think possibility the lack of her tambourine sets her off. Some people use those sort of things as comfort mechanisms on stage. She might feel rather naked without it and her band.

Naked? What? I just saw Zooey and naked and felt compelled to reply.

you've really got a hold on me is so much better downtempo. i wonder if they had to speed it up for time considerations or some other tv thing.
