Slumdog Won Best Original Song, Seven Other Oscars
Videogum liveblogged and livetweeted the Academy Awards last night, including the red carpet pre-show and Barbara Walters special, and Gabe did not kill himself. Success! Slumdog Millionaire won eight statues, including Best Picture and Best Original Song for A.R. Rahman's "Jai Ho," which beat out the M.I.A-assisted "O Saya" from the same film and WALL-E theme "Down To Earth" which John Legend sang in the ceremony (so unnatural, Peter Gabriel). Beyoncé did a cheesy song-and-dance with host Hugh Jackman -- his solo opening number was just a little less :( -- and the kids from High School Musical and Mamma Mia!. Queen Latifah sang with live Auto-Tune during the Dead People Montage so the memories of Charlton Heston and Paul Newman wouldn't have to compete for applause. And Penélope Cruz, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet, and Sean Penn took the acting awards. Can't wait for Slumdog 2.

Springsteen got screwed on the Best Song nod. But Penn really did deserve this one. I mean, Rourke did good, but Penn's commitment to completely immerse himself as a gay man was classic.

anyone whos seen milk, i included, will feel the best actor nod to penn was worthy... although i was expecting rourke to take the award, he was great in the wrestler. also does anyone else think this slumdog hype is bullshit... idk i just like a lot of the other movies more this year, i understand a movie isnt ALL acting but how can that movie be the best with not a single nomination for an acting category?

yea true well said, i guess i just have love for other movies and got pissed when slumdog won EVERY award. all the best picture nominees seemed quite equivalent to me, slumdog wasnt the standout film to me that i seems to be.

When I saw Slumdog, I told everyone I knew it was the best movie i'd seen in a couple of years. I was really happy to see the Oscars recognize it like that. Made me feel not as distant from the awards as I usually do.

I can't believe how shafted the Boss was for his original song on "The Wrestler". For that matter, you can't tell me there weren't ANY other movies this year that had original songs other than Slumdog Millionaire and Wall-E.
I was impressed that they had the audacity to sing Jai Ho and Down to Earth at the same time, highlighting the fact that both songs are actually the same damned song.

Yeah, that made me cringe. She didn't sing a note and Wolverine was belting it out. I;m sure she was just a tad embarrassed to call herself a singer next to those actors who could sing her into the dirt.

They did the right choices for the acting awards, they are amazing actors!!! Slumdog is the movie I enjoyed the most this year, even if it wasn't the best! I'm happy they followed the audience choice this time!

Just because Bruce Springsteen writes a song does not mean that it has to win an award. Frankly, I think the song sucks. It's just another dumb Springsteen song that people think they have to like.
Steve Martin was actually funny for a few minutes. Didn't see that coming.
That was Beyonce? She should never be allowed to perform anything ever again in public. Worst performance ever. Musicals suck. I will never see another musical in my life. I cannot condone that type of behavior. Why can't musicals have real songs in them?
And those highschool musical people? What a bunch of jerks they are. What were they doing there? How did they fit into the whole evening? I feel a deep sadness for many people.
Slumdog did deserve to win best picture.
If B Button had won best picture, I would have never paid any attention to the academy awards again. (Crash was another inexcusable choice a couple of years ago.) B Button is an utter piece of poop. People who like this film are not people I would surround myself with or take any advice on anything from.
Rourke got ripped.
But the biggest diss of the night was Milk winning best original screenplay over In Bruges. Who can't write the screenplay for a Bio-Pic? Just fill out the formula. In Bruges should have been nominated for best picture. And definitely should have won best screenplay.
In the end...
The best part of the Oscars was that Bruce Springsteen did not have to perform his stupid ass song.

No offense intended, but I found that the type of person who sincerely enjoyed Slumdog Millionare often doesn't question what they are watching. I, however, had a lot of trouble swallowing all of the cliche plot devices, cliche emotional shots, and cliche scoring. I usually don't harp on a movie for how they use a soundtrack, but literally every single thing besides the first scene has been done before. In Slumdog's case, it was just an overdone rehashed Hollywood patois. Love triangle, from literally living on top a trash heap poor to gangster rich, and the womanizing unrelatable villain (mya haha,) all in only 2-3 scenes per manouvre. With enough obviously worked in "Did you remember that part"s, only a critic could have disliked this movie. It was kind of astonishing that they didn't. Did the studio finesse some kind of ridiculous payola scheme or what? I'm all for just rescinding the awards and giving them to lost in translation. At this point, anything should win besides slumdog. Even the best song in the film lost to a worse one from the same.
