Smashing Pumpkins Debut New Song, Drummer At Sky Saxon Tribute

thumbnail icon: Smashing Pumpkins Debut New Song, Drummer At Sky Saxon Tribute

Last night a one-time supergroup dubbed Spirits In The Sky paid tribute to psych-rock pioneer Sky "Sunlight" Saxon at LA's Echoplex. Bringing together Billy Corgan's pickup group, Electric Prune bassist Mark Tulin, and Strawberry Alarm Clock keyboardist Mark Weitz, Spirits performed the Norman Greenbaum hit they were named after, the Seeds' "900 Million People Daily (All Makin' Love)," and a new Billy-penned song ostensibly intended for a future Pumpkins recording. While introducing the tune (working title: "Freak") Billy said,"These are the kind of lyrics I never would have written before I met Sky" before dedicating it to his late friend and collaborator. You will have to take his word for it as the vocals in this clip are pretty low. Toward the beginning you'll see the Pumpkins' new 19-year-old drummer Mike Byrne in action.

You can hear the vocals better in this incomplete clip.

In financial news, the auction for buying Billy Corgan lunch closed at $15,000. I'll let you know where we end up dining.

$15,000 dollars for lunch with Billy Corgan? Man, I'd love to be the waiter that picks up that 20% gratuity.

From what I can make out this sounds beautiful. The main problem with SPs last few albums was that Corgan's vocals were too high in the mix. While here it's too low, it reminds me how well he can blend with the music.
Here's hoping hoping for a more Siamese Dream sounding next album.

For some reason the last line of your comment bothered me. Did you not like the later offerings? Not to you personally but i am so tired of people who only clamour for that album. I grew up with it it was in our blood it truly meant something to us and for us and i can't bring myself to listen to it anymore for hearing it out loud now just reminds me of times long gone. Evolution is good people moving on and letting go. Memories fade...they were designed that way for a reason...

I don't think there will ever be another pumpkins album that doesn't make us extremely disappointed.

Thank you for linking to my video! The show was incredible. I'll have an official writeup at SmashingPumpkins.com probably tomorrow.

I genuinely believe the next pumpkins record is going to be amazing. Billy Corgan is one of the best songwriters/guitarists of our time.

Now would be a good time for all the assholes to jump back on the bandwagon.
