Sneak Peek At Hold Steady's A Positive Rage

thumbnail icon: Sneak Peek At Hold Steady's A Positive Rage

The Hold Steady clearly dig Springsteen, who clearly puts a lot into his live shows. Same goes for Craig Finn & Co. Springsteen's released a bunch of live albums and as you likely know, the Hold Steady are releasing their first, along with a live DVD, at the beginning of April. It's called A Positive Rage. This sneak peek short makes the DVD portion look pretty exciting. Not to push the Springsteen too far, but watch Finn make like "Dancing In The Dark" in San Francisco.

Let's hope they bring the same energy to Rachael Ray's showcase.

Positive Rage is out 4/7 via Vagrant.

A band that has the mission statement of not being original: sounds effing awesome.

Music that is actually original is painful to listen to. Even Animal Collective isn't exactly reinventing the wheel. Now if they claimed they were unique, that'd be annoying. But they give props where props are due, and make damn good songs.

Oh, fuck off. Like them or hate them, they're certainly not the worst of anything.

I really don't like it when people put a period after every word in a sentence. Especially a sentence like "worst band ever".

Finn always mentions "The Band" when talking about his influences but that really doesn't come through at all in their music.

I suppose he means he just wants to convey some vague sense of feeling good and playing upbeat music?

I think he wants to convey that happiness through collaboration and music that you see when you watch "The Last Waltz." Musically there's a vast difference, but when they did their tour with Drive By Truckers and every night featured encores with both bands playing together, it felt pretty communal and special, and that's the same vibe I get from this clip.

Seems like people either love them or hate them. Not much room in the middle with The Hold Steady. I'm in the "love them" camp. Looking forward to the DVD.

This reminds me that I need to steal my friend's copy of Boys and Girls in America this weekend.

I'm not a huge fan but this DVD looks interesting. I was thinking of seeing them in Michigan next month and now I may have to. Do they have any religious affiliation, because they are playing at a Protestant liberal arts college? Weird.

No I doubt they do, maybe the characters in his songs. But the venue they are playing, Calvin College, just books ridiculously good acts. I've seen Califone and Fleet Foxes there.

They're not religious per se, but they do use religious metaphors for the characters in the songs.

For sure, Craig Finn, is so awesome and it's the kind of awesome that you don't realize till you see the band live. He's just so into the crowd when he's on stage. They are playing an under-the-radar show near Baltimore next week and I'm definitely gonna go. People can sign up for free tickets at www.jdstudiono7.com. Some Jack Daniel's thing.... anyway it's on March 29th at Recher Theater, and it's going to be sweeeeet.
