Saturday Night Live Takes A Load Off Fanny

Fairly whimpering end to a decent season for Saturday Night Live this weekend, but this sketch played with one of our all-time fave tunes to some comedic effect...

That's the note! Think you know what "The Weight" is about? Think again. There's more to this tune than that timeless hook and the "Fanny/Annie" confusion. This article examines the tune's meaning and hits on everything from Martin guitars to venereal disease ("the load" is the clap?). We've tossed that link back and forth on IM and have decided it's impossibly thorough. Or entirely insane. Either way, a great read if you love that song as do we.

And SNL got into the Pitchfork-referencing game with a sketch about possibly playing The Garden State soundtrack at a high school prom: "That won a Grammy? It was like a Pitchfork mix CD." (A P4K mix CD that scored a 7.0.)

And, the first single ain't bad, but how terrible was that second Maroon 5 song? "She Will Be Loved" with a vaguely Stevie-fied melody and lyrics most definitely pilfered from a high schooler's love journal. (Or LiveJournal.) No thank you.

but isn't it kind of a more toned-down rip off of adam sandler's "memory lane" sketch?

"It also reminds me of the time I saw a 60 year old guy slide down
one of those things and he was going so fast his bathing suit fell off, and I just stood there and stared at his big beutiful hairy balls flopping around, holy geez I wanted to lick em'"

Reminds me more of a rip off of those Bill Brasky sketches.

But either way, I was hoping this thread will focus on the Band ... 'cause now everytime I hear the song all I can think about is that I have no idea what it's about.

this episode of snl was possibly the worst i've ever seen. this one is a rip off of bill brasky, only it's worse, because it doesn't build or go anywhere, just plateaus at the 'i guess that's kinda funny' level and stays there.

I guess this is okay but nothing beats Lucy Lawless in Stevie Nicks Fajita Round-Up.

A decent season? You gotta be kidding me... Maybe you dudes liked it for the Maroon 5, but that had to be one of the worst seasons of SNL ever.

Here's a fairly recent Robbie Robertson interview for those that don't wanna talk about SNL

Ju Bean:

Fajita Round-Up is one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches. It deserves the love.

I'm with the gum on this one. Decent season, piss poor finale. But, that's what happens when you get the Braff to host.

Also, Tom Breihan gives the Pitchfork reference a 4.7

I couldn't sit through the SNL skit, but the article was terrific, if kind of mind boggling. It's kind of cool to have twelve different interpretations of each line at your disposal, though -- you can mix and match as the mood takes you.

I think the only character sketches I enjoyed happened to have the Target checkout lady.

I watched the whole episode, yet the only thing I can remember is my new catchphrase of the week, from this sketch: "every time I put a condom in my mouth, I think about my dad."
