So You Think You Can Dance To White Stripes?

thumbnail icon: So You Think You Can Dance To White Stripes?

We last checked in on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance when a couple of contestants moved their feet to Junior Boys' "In the Morning." That felt like more than enough, but the show's returned to our radar because this time a dozen folks dressed appropriately in red and black faux-military garb got theatrical to the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army." It was choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon (he loves war) and it's sort of like Les Mis meets "Rhythm Nation."

The real Elephant in the room is that, no, not all of them can dance.

UPDATE: And apparently someone danced to Radiohead's "15 Step" last month. Thanks sinkfloridasink for the tip. Starts at 1m45s...

Last season, they danced to Mirah's "The Garden". It said her name on the screen and everything.

Last November it was my friends' joint 21st birthday party. Only my friends' mothers were on the dance floor at the time of the incident; the song was coming to an end and I currently had control of the song selection. It was on White Stripes' catalogue, I panicked, not wanting there to be an awkward silence between songs, and selected 'Icky Thump'. Let me tell you, watching two middle aged women try to dance to that song while maintaining their party-smiles is horrific.

Not to take away from the truly hilarious image you just presented, but whose 21st birthday features moms and a dance floor? Sounds more like a bar mitzvah.

This is like one of those dreams you have when you fall asleep with music blasting. Except this is one you would be too embarrassed to tell anyone about.

Is it me or does it seem stupid to choose a song with a fast continuing beat like that?

Actually, a girl danced a solo to Radiohead's "15 Steps" a couple of episodes ago. And now I have officially announced that I watch this show.

That was actually very good. The beat was difficult and the choreographers found a way around that. A lot of people here are young and cynical, and that's fine, but one can clearly see that was a good dance routine given the music.

SYTYCD is the shit. I love this show, it has great dancers and amazing choreographers. It's one of the few reality shows that has artistic credibility while maintaining a strong entertainment value as well.

Last night on SYTYCD they had a song by Jib Kidder as well. WINDOWDIPPER. So Rad. Jib Kidder is on States Rights Records who have also put out YACHT, Dirty Projectors, The Blow, Final Fantasy, White Rainbow, and a bunch of other stuff.

So what, how is this news? White Stripes, Radiohead etc are just bands, they're products, no different from the Jonas Brothers or Lil Wayne. Plus, indie artists do this kind of appropriation all the time, the latest being Discovery's atrocious version of "I Want You Back" and going all the way back to Sonic Youth recording "Superstar". This pretentious indie faux indignation has repressed provincialism written all over it.

There was one this season where a girl was dancing to CocoRosie's "By Your Side." It was really quite bizarre.

I hope Stereogum doesn't start covering song choices on reality tv shows now.

I think this is one of the all time best songs. It is even more amazing that it is performed by just two people. I wish White Stripes would come up with more songs like this. They seem to have been pretty behind the scenes as of late.

You guys are crazy this dance was incredible, NappyTabs's musicality in their choroeography is brilliant. Another note is that the music in this video is not in sync, thats why it looks odd.

Seriously how can you all be so snobby that you can't recognize the talent (and how on beat they are) of these dancers in combination with this song? I personally find it amazing that they can dance to "Seven Nation Army" and bring more awesomeness to the song!

A month or so ago, two Santigold songs were also used on the program. Thought it kind of interesting.
