Stephen Malkmus Visits Fox News' Red Eye

thumbnail icon: Stephen Malkmus Visits Fox News' Red Eye

If you happened to be watching the Fox News Channel at 3AM this past Friday -- like who wasn't? -- you may have caught a sorta surreal happening on Red Eye: After the Take-Away strains of Real Emotional Trash favorite "We Can't Help You," Steve Malkmus gamely explaining the meaning of a "Jick" ("between a jerk and a dick," among others), talking about his contributions to I'm Not There, discussing Blender's heavily debated "The 100 Greatest Indie-Rock Albums Ever" list (he offers VU props), and his old job as a guard at the Whitney, etc. If you don't know the show, it's called Red Eye. It's supposed to be silly. They don't talk politics or anything. Just talking head nonsense. One 'Gum staffer mentioned:

I went through a period of time when I DVDR-d this show every night. One thing that's funny is it's the first thing to go if any news happens at night. It's just like "Oh sorry guys, some blond chick went missing in Oklahoma, you don't have a show tonight, go home." It happened like once a week. Also, I love it when the guy with the huge crevasse between his eyes (host Greg Gutfeld) calls all of the women hot, and then he introduces one of them and doesn't call her hot, and she gets visibly disappointed.

OK, she has us wanting to watch this more regularly...

Why no questions about the Pavement reunion? Gutfeld wants us to think he's a Pavement fan. Maybe he is, but you can't tell by the dumb questions. Maybe Malkmus's publicist has a sense of humor? Regardless, as any SM fan knows, so does he ... and he's pretty fucking hilarious.

More Malkmus on the internet today: A conversation with Gothamist. Still no Pavement reunion Qs, but plenty of talk about Joggers and the beautiful hipsters of Williamsburg.

Redeye is one of the weirdest shows I've ever seen. They do talk politics, and they can be conservative, but they're funny in that totally un-PC way like your senile racist grandpa. It is surreal. If you're super earnest, na, you might not like it.

I could only barely tolerate that host. I would definitely NOT want to hang out with him.

I do not like me some Stevie Malkmus. Fox + Steve = makes sense. With Vampire Weekend, it's like Steve Malkmus has spawned. I do not like me some Stevie Malkmus.

Red Eye is the best. Frequently I'm laughing audibly. DVR is a necessity. If insightful music commentary were pork, I'd pull it and stuff it in my buns.

Watch this show all of the time. It is definately made for if you have a short attention span, because it is all over the place, but in a very good, hilarious way.

fox news is generally atrocious but this show is great! its always funny and bill schulz, one of the permanent panelists, is hilarious. it used to be on at 2 am which was a better time than 3 am but I think fox probably doesn't care about it because it is good.

please do not be fooled by hip guests and "un-PC" shenanigans. This show is simply a well crafted device used to grab the attention of drunk, impressionable, 19 year old college students eating pizza in a dorm room. These same kids will comment to friends and leave posts on the net saying, "I know it's on Fox but it's pretty funny. I mean, Malkmus was on it so..." Now it is suddenly ok to watch this lie of a television station. We must'nt be had by such trickery.

By far the best thing on at 3:00 AM. It's easily the most irreverent show ever on a 24-hour news channel. Who knew FoxNews was so hip?

I admit openly to watching fox news. I enjoy to be shocked and titillated, I've also been known to listen to Rush once in a while for the same reason. But this show, with its crass attempt to manipulate me into genuinely enjoying any of the programming on fox news, is utter trash. It's not even entertaining for the cringe factor, it's just garbage. I did happen to see Malkmus as I was flipping channels and cringed even harder than usual at the interview. I won't even watch it again to catch the beginning it was so bad.

Wait... when you said you listened to Rush -- did you mean "Tom Sawyer" Rush, or the fat guy with the painkiller addiction Rush?

Wow, that was an absolutely pointless interview. Can't wait for it to somehow be referenced in Malkmus rambling, meaningless lyrics. One thing I will agree with homeboy about, Blender was wrong.

redeye is some hoary old white billionaire's (i.e. murdoch) idea of what 20 year olds will think is funny but in actuality don't, nor does anyone else.
