Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks & Blitzen Trapper Cover James Gang
Adding another entry to the canon unexpected covers, Steve Malkmus & the Jicks teamed up with stage mates and fellow Portland residents Blitzen Trapper to put a spin on James Gang's James Gang Ride Again classic "Funk #49." The hootenanny took place at the Pageant in St. Louis this past Saturday. It involves as much awkward dancing as it does inventive percussion -- see SM's bottle water, for instance.

Much more Malkmus than when he and his Jicks were last set to video.

SM s the whitest man alive, but god do I love him.

It's not exactly the best or most interesting cover I've ever heard, but I bet it was a lot of fun if you were in the audience.

I was there and, yes, it was sloppy but more fun than you can imagine. From now on I will do the stiff-legged dance when hearing that song.

sounds like Blues Hammer from Ghost World .... gross

He's been covering the strangest stuff for years. When the Jicks first got together he would cover Fairport Convention, Mellow Candle, sampled Moby Grape in "Civilized Satanist." He introduced me to a slew of Psychedelic 60's and 70's rock through his covers.

yea, i like all those bands, esp Moby Grape .... but i dont need some Stockton Hipster showing me the way. 'Introduction" to psychedelic music is achieved through research, not listening to Crooked Crooked Rain or Wowwie Zowwie. pfft.
