Stipe, Sigur Rós Rock For Tibetan Culture

Monday night's Tibet House benefit concert was a rockstar-studded affair, featuring performances from the likes of Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Michael Stipe, Sigur Rós, and Debbie Harry. We weren't there, but Rolling Stone was on hand to witness some rare R.E.M.:

Michael Stipe and Patti Smith -- just two of the heavyweights on hand to celebrate Tibetan culture at Carnegie Hall's seventeenth annual shindig -- launched into a rendition of "Everybody Hurts" that made everyone watching a little verklempt. But before anyone had time to wipe their eyes, Stipe unveiled "Chorus and the Ring," a never-been-played tune inspired by a chat he had with William Burroughs about Kurt Cobain. Don't you love it when pop culture comes full circle?
We dug up some shitty vid of Stipe performing the Reveal rarity, but the audio (and the fact that it was a live debut of the tune) make it view worthy.

And here is vid of Sigur Rós doing "Heysátan." Again, not the greatest quality vid, but rabid fans (like us) will appreciate the audio.

Please don't write Sigur Rós with ö, it dosn't make any sense in Icelandic...

Check out www.remhq.com They posted a rehearsal recording of this song. Michael's vocals are overwhelmed by the guitar, but it's worth a listen.

How is Chorus and the Ring a "never been played tune?" I guess its place on an official REM record doesn't count. Never played live is one thing, never played is another. Good work Rolling Stone!
