Stone Temple Pilots Play First Of Reunion Shows, Scott Weiland Does Not Get Kicked Out Or Arrested

thumbnail icon: Stone Temple Pilots Play First Of Reunion Shows, Scott Weiland Does Not Get Kicked Out Or Arrested

We've been keeping you apprised of the Velvet Revolver drama. Now it's time for a bit of Stone Temple Pilots non-drama. After being fired by Slash & Co. last week, Scott Weiland played his first set with the reunited STP last night at the Harry Houdini Estate in Los Angeles. It was the band's first together in five years. NME reports how it went down:

Original members Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz performed for a largely industry crowd to launch the 65-city tour they announced last week.
Looking dapper in a dark three-piece suit and tie, Weiland quipped, "None of us will wax poetically, we'll just bash each other with guitars and mic stands."
...Earlier in the evening, contortionists kept the crowd entertained underneath a colourful tent on the Houdini Estate. Weiland explained that the band chose to hold the event there because they had come to the secluded Hollywood Hills mansion in the early 1990s with director Gus Van Sant to film a video and fell in love with the place.
"We're back together and we're going on tour this summer," Weiland said before announcing that Stone Temple Pilots are set to play a date at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on June 24.
The band left the stage after just six songs, and the enthusiastic crowd chanted "STP" until they re-emerged. "It's just a hand job tonight," Weiland quipped before giving the crowd one final song, 'Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart'.

They opened with "Big Empty," which someone captured on video...

They sound good, but it's kinda hard to get into it with that girl talking over parts. Here's what came after the opener:

"Big Empty"
"Plush"
"Vasoline"
"Lady Picture Show"
"Big Bang Baby"
"Interstate Love Song"
"Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart"

Hopefully they beef it up some for the recently extended summer tour. Maybe they can get Velvet Revolver to open for them.

Um, I don't really like this band. Please bring back Tad. And Dickless. Plus this video reminds me of when I 'bootlegged' a Prince show during the Lovesexy tour using a cassette recorder I sneaked into Madison Square Garden. We were all the way up in the nose-bleeds, and all you could hear on the tape was my sister and I screaming 'woooo!' louder than the dang band.

As much as I've loved STP since the first time I heard "Plush" in 1994, I am not optimistic about my chances of seeing them in August.

My first visit to this site and after reading these lame blogs I know why. Who are you Lawrence and why are you such a loser?

theyre fucking bad ass....you down below should eat a tube steak and stfu....yeah you-do it now! STP regardless how f'd up Scott is or isn't, bands like this and many others will soon fade away to drug OD's or whatever kind of uncertain death...so if you can catch em while they're still alive and around you should cherish the opportunity your ears will never forget.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...
