SXSW Video: Spoon @ Stubb's

As much as the stated intention of the annual trek to Austin is to discover new music, we couldn't resist checking in with hometown heroes Spoon at Stubb's for the Esquire showcase on Saturday night. We justified it with the hope to hear stuff from the new record (which we did, including "Target," or "Don't Make Me A Target," depending on whom you ask), but a set heavy on familiar tunes like "Paper Tiger," "Stay Don't Go," "The Fitted Shirt," and "I Summon You" was more than fine by us. For your viewing pleasure, Britt and crew work through Kill Moonlight's "The Way We Get By."

I saw Spoon at the Roky Erikson Party a few days ago and they were great. I can't believe Rob Pope is in the band now, it was sureal. I thought he was still with White Whale and Koufax.

Wow Greg, I used to like Spoon but you set me straight!!!! Thanks for clearing things up about Spoon... and with just one word! One holier-than-thou, just-snobby-enough-to-be-hip word!

Underrated.

My brother doesn't like Spoon. He thinks they lack a certain je ne sais quoi, perhaps you could call it "soul", like they don't ever touch on anything that seems overly personal, and I can certainly see his point.

That said, I still dig Spoon and would like to see them someday; Fitted Shirt is one of my favorite songs ever.
