SXSW 2009: GZA Joins The Black Lips
The Black Lips' songs, especially on 200 Million Thousand, possess a nice fuzzy texture and the Atlantans appropriate great garage-isms, but I've always been less than enthused by the band because from carefully marketing their "escape" from India to embodying every clichéd Vice signifier on earth to the "we are loose cannons" live antics, they just try too hard. Whelp, looks like they didn't try hard enough during this SXSW on-stage collaboration with GZA. Or maybe it's just that flower punks were a bit out of their comfort zone? It lasted a few minutes at the Compound.

this summary is spot-on. quite frankly couldn't help but roll my eyes at the "escape from india" silly fabricated BS. vice's attempt at making this band seem edgy and off the cuff is patently contrived. focus on the derivative music instead, duuudes.

If they try to hard, fine, but the derivitive music is still fun and the live shows are still more energetic and entertaining than almost anything else.

Ironic how its so hip to hate on Vice. The Black Lips are a great band in an indie landscape of very safe and bland bands. At least they're trying something different. GZA with the Black LIps? Come on, that Rules. Even if it is a train wreck, it's a beautiful train wreck.

Vice sucks. I once posted some Black Lips songs on my blog and they made a comment saying: REMOVE THIS NOW!!! WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS ILLEGAL AND SUSPECT FOR JAIL TIME. I'm of course cool with removing things upon request, but damn were they rude about it.

Funny, because I've always been less than enthused because of their terrible, lazy, shitty-on-purpose aesthetic.

The only thing I didn't like about this combo was that GZA took up half of their set. Good for a song or two but could have been better if they had one song they actually rehearsed together.
But whatever Black Lips can do no wrong in my book.
Ian at the Vice showcase at Emo's- "We're tired of people saying they don't like rap music. How about people just like good music." I guess this was their reasoning?

i completley thought the india thing was over dramatized and at least somewhat bullshit, but in the end i could give less of a fuck because the black lips, no matter how many lame vice stereotypes they embody are the cream of the musical crop, and hopefully are just the beginning of better bands to come. I support this band through whatever because frankly they've earned it, my mind and my wad is blown.
