Tay Zonday Live On Kimmel

Well? Is he faking, or isn't he? 4 million YouTube views later, you thought you had it sussed out (or, more likely, stopped caring). So did we. But then Tay dropped by Kimmel's studio to bring the thunder of "Rain" live and in the flesh. Of course, you're still gonna have to use YouTube to observe, but do it -- it's f'in mesmerizing. (Which is a kind way to describe the audience's expressions during the Tay display.) Really though, you've gotta stick around for the post-performance interview. Note the stiff body while talking; okay, his voice is producing that sound, but when you're using your normal speaking voice, is your torso that stiff? And please observe the death stare he gives Catherine Bell after her "Chocolate" assessment. If you are like him in either of those two respects ... please let's never meet. (via Best Week Ever)

We fully realize that the meme has run its course when there's a John Mayer remix, but we're powerless to resist giving you a link to Chocolate Radiohead.

Okay NOW it has officially run its course. Still think he's faking though. Still think we're in love with him. (What is it?! What is he?!) Anyway, after the jump, more apologies to Matt Damon.

Congratulations to this post for having one of the most absurdly far-reaching tag fields in Stereogum history.

I wish he hadn't pulled an Ashley Simpson on the performance though...it was totally lip synched! Sigh. The one chance to see Zonday live gone...

i'd never seen that before. my favourite part is when it cuts to the keyboard and he's performing that loop live. that's pretty hilarious.

i dont think he lipsyched. afterall, he *moves away from the mike to breathe in, and you can clearly hear him breathing while singing.

however, i think the voice is totally fake. the stiff torso, as mentioned, the downward chin, how it starts out super deep and then he kind of gets tired and it's not as deep and then he realises it's not as deep and it gets super deep again.

and then there's the fact that his name is adam bahner. bummers all around.

I am blissfully unfamiliar with this entire phenomenon.

I'm glad this shit's popularity is running it's course soon. I hated it the first time I saw it on TV.

I believe I've lost my credibility long ago, but as Robert Pollard once opined, "don't stop now".

I don't like the song, but Zonday is getting the most of his fifteen minutes. If he's not meant to be a musician, he at least gets a glimpse at fame. How many no-nadas out there are recording in their basements on virus-corrupted computers, using out of date gear, making music as close to the sound in their head will allow but their circumstances refuse?

Oh no, I've said too much.

Point is this: I think the guy should enjoy his time in the sun, even if it is brief and, as we see, kind of a mockery. If this is as far as he goes, he's still farther than the rest of us in Anonymous Land.

I'm so glad I never knew about this dude or got caught up in whatever apparent Internet phenomenon he was, because there's good indie, and there's bad indie, and this is altogether a whole nother animal.

the whole allure of the initial youtube video was that this guy looked 13. its much more impressive to see a 13 year old with a bizarrely deep and WASP-y voice singing an insanely repetitive, vaguely socially conscious song than it is for a geeky grad student to do so. grad students do that all of the time
