Ted Leo Covers Bruce Springsteen

This vid comes from Ted's solo set at the Callum Robbins Benefit Show at Northsix in Williamsburg Friday night where, according to The Battering Room, cover lover Leo played 11 covers in a 16 song set. We're sure no one complained though; by now we know Ted can pull off his own brand of Thin Lizzy ("Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone," performed that night) or Idol Pop ("Since U Been Gone"), but he really knocks it out of the park on this Boss tune. Oh shit, "Glory Days" was the baseball one, right? Anyway, forget the metaphor. "Dancing In Dark" live in Brooklyn is pretty sweet, despite the lack of a 21st century hipster Courtney Cox, as P4K points out.

Always was, and still is, my favorite Springsteen song. Sweet.

yeah, joseph, Rude Boys is Ted's song. "Little Girl in Bloom" is the Thin Lizzy cover.

everyone else is copying the sound, might as well give the lyrics some attention, too.

He also did Outdoor Miner by Wire. My new wave friend almost walked out at that, but he is a bit intense.

Leo's been doing the Brooce song a few years now.

"Rude Boys" is a Leo original, but, as the item said, it's Ted's own brand of Thin Lizzy. That song and "Timorous Me" are unabashed Thin Lizzy tributes. You can hear early (Greetings; Wild, the Innocent...) Springsteen in Thin Lizzy, too, so it's sort of Springsteen filtered through Thin Lizzy filtered through Leo. He wears his influences on his sleeve sometimes, but he's so obvious about it that those songs come off as knockoffs. Interested to hear what the other covers were...

Ditto what Brian said, and that was w/the Rx. The highlight of the CB's Gallery performance was a pair of audience members jumping up on stage and doing the Bruce-Courtney dance during the song.

I also saw him do it when he played a bill with Rainer Maria at Northsix a couple years ago. Caitlyn had lost her voice a couple songs into Rainer Maria's set, so Ted jumped up and did "Dancing in the Dark". The cool part was Caitlyn jumping back up to recreate the Courtney Cox dance from the video.

There is only one person that should be doing Springsteen tunes, and that's Springsteen.
