The Darjeeling Limited's Kink-y Trailer
Been a while since we've last been to India (10 years for Amrit, a lifetime for the rest), but the trailer for the Wes Anderson/Roman Coppola/Jason Schwartzman-penned The Darjeeling Limited makes us want to book a fraternal trip to Hindustan ASAP. In fairness though, a lot of that has to do with the typical Anderson cinematic ticks (quirky costumes/dialogue, huge-lettered actor intros, a Wilson brother), and of course, Wes's knack for soundtrack. Sounds like he's working out the Kinks on this one, at least from the 2:21 trailer: the first proper song is "This Time Tomorrow," the second proper tune is "Strangers," and the credits bounce back to "This Time Tomorrow" -- all from the Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One. Dig those kurtas...

Supposedly Bill Murray has a cameo along with Natalie Portman. Mmmmmmmmmmm... Bill Murray...

What's Wes Anderson's deal with India? Every movie has absurdist Indian characters, and now an entire movie. It just feels like he's fetishizing Indian culture.

There was an article I once read about Franzen and Anderson's fascination/fetishization of South Asia. I wish I could remember where I read it though.

Look for Ed Park's "The Connections" [Village Voice Jan 8 '02]in which he discusses Anderson's thing for South Asia.

Well, no sign of Murray but Anjelica was in the trailer. I'm excited.

The Kinks tracks and more are here:

It also looks like Mark Mothersbaugh has nothing to do with this film unfortunately..

MC Herschlag is listed on IMDB.

Wes had plans to make Rushmore scored solely to Kinks songs, but that later turned into all British Invasion songs. Now maybe with the whole brothers concept of the movie and that band (Ray and Dave Davies being bros) he'll be using that idea for this film.

I'm quite excited for this movie.

Piebald does a great cover of the Kinks' 'Strangers' on their new record. I was disappointed to learn that Piebald hadn't written it themselves.

Gotta say....this leaves me a little cold. I love Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and Tenenbaums. Aquatic was a huge letdown, and this looks to be more of the same style-over-substance type thing. Notice the "Featuring music from the films of Satyajit Ray and Merchant Ivory" credit? Pretentious much?

I cannot wait for this movie. It looks amazing!

"book a fraternal trip to Hindustan ASAP"
Why? Hah my parents from India & I've been forced to go a few times. It's full of the extremely poor and the extremely rich bastards that don't care about the former. It's a real contradictory country that's just glamorized excessively by Bollywood.

Ok, wayne... Not to pick on you at all, but I'm so tired of hearing people say they were "let down" by an artist/book/album/movie/etc.
You didn't like it. Just say you didn't like it!! I promise you that the person who made the movie/book/album did not have you in mind when they made it. Saying it let YOU down puts YOU at the center and implies that your singular taste was not satisfied and the artist is at fault for not keeping YOU happy.
What I'm saying is that it's fine to have your opinion, but REALLY (REALLY, REALLY) pointless to use "it let me down" or "I was disappointed" as a critique in blog comments when, um, NO ONE HERE KNOWS WHO THE FUCK YOU ARE and so cannot gain a single worthwhile thing from that statement. Pretentious much? yep.

Uh, Lars, you're a little misguided in your semantic rant against Wayne.
If Wayne were to say, "I didn't like it," he would still be using the personal pronoun "I," which is at the center of your dislike for his post. Whether the verb is "disappoint," "let down," or "dislike" really doesn't matter (and in fact, the first two are preferable because they're more specific; they give the connotation that earlier work created an expectation, whereas simply saying "dislike" presents the critique without any context) because they all express the same negative critique.
Now, Wayne may be a douche with no valid opinions, who knows, but his disappointment is no more egocentric than any other review who simply says he has a dislike, and that wouldn't change even if we did know who Wayne was.

i'm quite into the fact that anderson co-wrote it with cousins jason schwartzman and roman coppala. should be interesting.

I've always thought "The India Song" by Big Star had a place in one of Anderson's movies...surprised not to hear it on the trailer. Maybe it's in the movie.

'I was let down' implies you were planning on liking it, but it didn't live up to your expectations. Where as 'I didn't like it' meant you were neutral going in and it just wasn't for you. Works for me

He's really just going to make the same movie over and over for the rest of his career, isn't he?

yes G and they are all going to be awesome. if you were "let down" by a WA film, watch it again. for me, they always get better after repeat viewings. the characters and dialogue are always interesting and hilarious.

Wow. Brody, Wilson, and Schwartzman all have magnificent noses.
Anyways, very excited about the film.

I've said it for the better part of 20 years, but as long as I can listen to The Kinks every day, life is good.
You kids will get to an age (43, for example) and realize only about three bands you worship now will still be worth worshipping then.
May I suggest bypassing that particular heartbreak and just buying a bunch of Kinks records?
No, seriously, I love you guys.

I never noticed how insanely cute Adrian Brody is.

"He's really just going to make the same movie over and over for the rest of his career, isn't he?"
If its not broke, don't fix it. All of his films are filled with rich characters and stories that are all accompanied with fantastic music. Even when he makes something like Life Aquatic which many seemed to not like, it was still better than most of the other shit being put out, so yes I hope he keeps making the same films

I'm not trying to be smart or mean or anything but can anyone who didn't like life aquatic explain why. In my opinion, it was the best wes anderson film so i just want to know what makes people think it was a disappointing . I honesty do want to know.

BRODY. now someone please make a movie with adrian and adam.
Score = 0
yes, i would also like to say that the life aquatic had some of the best wes anderson moments to date - and the best cast to date for sure!...i just don't understand the poor reviews...perhaps there are individuals out there who do not appreciate jacques cousteau?
Score = 0
oh yes! The Life Aquatic is my favorite Anderson--it is so subtle and moving. And the sigur ros at the end was one of the most beautiful moments i've seen on film. I'm looking forward to this one. peace!
