The Dead Weather Bring "Hang You From The Heavens" To The Tonight Show

thumbnail icon: The Dead Weather Bring "Hang You From The Heavens" To The Tonight Show

The Raconteurs are presumably still in the midst of a pretty successful run, and between Brendan Benson's upcoming solo LP and this here project they're using this down time to sate their (extra)extracurricular passions. But nobody doubts the true color of Jack's stripes lie in his name, and until he makes another record with Meg everything else is just a high profile (and probably lucrative) stopgap. The Dead Weather's a mixed bag quality wise, still The Tonight Show stage (and Jack's buddy Conan's fawning response) probably did a good deal to reach into the heart of America and convince couch-and-channel surfers that this is a Real Rock Band; all the Zeppelin stomp and bluesy swagger might not have much substance beneath it, but these dudes and lady definitely know how to strike a pose. The camera will take charisma over songwriting any day.

I was trying to figure out how to express this exact same setiment, then I read your post and realized I didn't need to.

So, +1 I guess.

I don't think my TV had ever seen such a tremendous amount of flying black hair, combined clothing and cool rock star attitude in one single sitting.

I wish the music was as good. :/

Are you dudes serious? That was an ass-kicking smashing success and one of the hardest late night performances in a long time.

rowdy kick drum art... weird, too much black, more red and white!

they were awesome live, but the sound on last night's show was kind of weirdly off. it kept seeming like they were missing an instrument or something, or like jack's drums were actually buckets. the sound was definitely off

I was there (brag...) and the sound was way better in person. Vocals not so high and the guitar sounded killer. I love me some Jackie White, but am not a Kills fan, so this band is kinda meh, for me.

And yes, Conan rules.

Not much substance? Compared to what, that recent “highbrow” performance where three knob-twisters jerked their heads around while grown men with sheets over their heads did the jig in the background. Pick your skinny jeans out of your ass Stereogum writer, that – along with Sonic Youth on Letterman – were the best late night performances this year.

The missing instrument was clearly the USC Marching Band. I've heard the version with them on it and that thing kills.

"The camera will take charisma over songwriting any day."

!!!! What! That is what is wrong with the attitude toward music today, that many people would call a 'hipster' one. Who the hell wants to see 4 people wear black and act as cool as they can, and leave lackluster music in their wake? It's the exact same problem the Kills have. Remember their performance on Conan about a year ago? Granted, this is better, but more substance, please. Is that a ridiculous request?

In response to your questions: I, for one, would like to see that if this is what it sounds like. No I don't remember that performance and yes it is a ridiculous request, but only because of your needlessly exacting standards. I don't understand everybody's beef with this, take it for what it is; blues(y-ish) music. Simplicity and repetition are part of the genre's aesthetic, both in terms of lyrics and instrumentation. If this isn't what you mean by substance then be less equivocal, if it is then remain unsated with The Dead Weather and listen to some Sufjan Stevens, whose substance I'm certain you're smitten with.

Oh I also hamhandedly gave you a +1 when moving for the reply link, so if you want an accurate representation of how much people like you then you should probably take that into account.

I thought Alison was hot until 2:33 when the camera stops on her and, well, ugh. Much hotter when her crazy black hair is obscuring her face. Jack White is definitely the hotter chick in this band. And I thought those big guitars looked rather silly on Dean and Jack.

That was so deep when she said "I want to grab you by the hair and raise you up to the heavens"....

Now that it's over, I need to put on some Jimi Hendrix, so I can get that gross trite retro, lame, souless, narcissistic, over stylized excuse for blues music out of my head

You want to talk about all posturing and no substance? Look no further than this news post. God forbid amrit associates with a band that could have appeal outside of indie blogs. You're way too cool for that.

heh, so this post was basically amrit venting how anything that Jack White does other than the White Stripes is shit. Come on, The Dead Weather tracks so far are better than anything off Icky Thump, evidenced by the fact that there's actual competent drumming in them.

I don't understand how this was not enjoyable. Really good, no frills rock and roll. It has a really nice 70's vibe to it. Makes me want to jam some Nazareth, maybe even Sugarloaf. When did music lose it's fun? There doesn't have to be any great meaning to it all. Look somewhere else for your esoteric desires. Not every book is the Bible, not every album is Bitte Orca.

"When did music lose it's fun?"

I'm guessing it was when bands decided to dress all in black and scowl through an entire performance?

On the other hand, oversize novelty guitars are always fun!

Not the worst thing ever... but never have I seen a band which so obviously exists only to prove that a guy can play the drums. OK, Jack, we get it. Now lose the 10-second mini-solos -- it's not 1974.

well, he already proved he could play marimba, piano, bass, guitar, wurlitzer... I'm pretty sure if there were some new band with Jack White playing the triangle, you'd still see that band on the cover of SPIN with the headline "Jack White's New Band, the (inconsequential band name)". And man, you know he'd rock the Hell out of that triangle...

It's not bad, but not as Super as I would expect from a Supergroup. I don't see myself listening to this album more than twice, but I haven't really got into any of Jacks work since Get Behind Me Satan.

And to KVN- music is still fun: Springsteen is still touring.

I'll leave my final judgement for the album but it's not looking very promising. The main problem of these so-called supergroups is that people already know they are capable of better and think that joining all this talent should be a step above what it actually is.

These bands already have some part of their way carved, as anyone who's ever liked either of their previous bands will clearly give it a shot. And that's exactly why most of these supergroups fail.

If you all can't appreciate a wonderful marriage between Alison's vocal style (The Kills are *excellent* Rock & Roll) and Jack's blues riffs, then I give up on popular music. We need this.

You guys are insane. This was a rockin performance. Coming from a drummer, Jack knows what he's doing and yes he has way too many drums... but that's what you need to make a chord on tuned drums. Coming from somebody who's seen the Kills up close, Alison is even hotter and more intense than before. And those other guys are even impressed with their own band.
