The Decemberists Cover Robyn Hitchcock, Waterboys In London

Reader Maya writes in from across the Atlantic:

Ok so unsurprisingly none of the London music press covered The Decemberists performance at the Shepherds Bush Empire last night. I’m not sure if it was the mid-show calisthenics or the re-enactment of the American War of Independence that kept the NME away. Maybe they were too busy coining new musical genres… Either way The Decemberists London show deserves some blogging love. Not only did Colin get the Brits stretching, dancing and singing (no small feat) but he was joined onstage by Robyn Hitchcock of The Soft Boys and Mike Scott of The Waterboys for the first of their two encores. He sang along with his indie idols on Madonna of the Wasps (w/ Robyn Hitchcock) and Fisherman’s Blues (w/ Mike Scott). The moment clearly moved Meloy, who had to re-compose himself before heading out for the second encore “I’ve just lived my teenage rock n roll fantasy/ pornography” he told the audience.
Thanks Maya! We know Colin's fitness program well, but "Madonna Of The Wasps" and "Fisherman's Blues" (with the principals!) must have been extra special. By the grace of YouTube, here's Colin and Robyn on "Madonna."

Fingers crossed for those MP3s!

UPDATE: Never underestimate the GooTube. "Fisherman's Blues" video after the jump. (Thanks Colin.)

Before the haters get their digs I'd just like to mention that Colin Meloy Rocks Face. He was pulling the same crazy out for 100 person shows at schubas years ago. So ptttth!

Their gig in Glasgow a few nights before was pretty great, too, partly cos of the music but also because Colin simply couldn't decipher any of the dialogue coming towards him from the crowd. The guy standing behind me screaming 'MY NAME IS LESLIE ANNE LEVINE' became severely annoying after the 10th time; I was hoping Colin would play the damn thing to shut him up, but he probably couldn't tell what he was saying, either.

Yep. I totally care about this. Big time. I got to be onstage with them just before these videos. Amazing night. It was beyond thrilling to see Colin's face during his performance with his idols. It was insanity. Robyn Hitchcock even referred to himself as "Colin's Uncle."

One of the best gigs I've been to recently. The renactment of the American Revolution was a particular highlight, but these songs were cool too.
