The Who Hate Each Other, Various People Cover The Who
We've written plenty about VH1's "Rock Honors." The Foo Fighters and Gaz Coombes' take on "Bargain" wasn't exciting. The Flaming Lips' practice footage was, relatively speaking. (It involved an illuminated gong, remember.) Adding to our footage of bands covering the who, VH1's posted more clips from the evening. The rumors are true: Pearl Jam did a great job with their choices and performances. The Who themselves played, too. Which is cool, considering the NY Post story that claims Pete and Roger aren't on speaking terms, are traveling separately, have dressing rooms on the opposite ends of the hallway, etc. Partly because Townshend wants to premiere new material on the upcoming tour and Daltrey wants to stick to the oldies. I'm with Daltrey on this one, Pete -- you guys are a traveling museum. No offense, but people aren't showing up to hear your new tunes. The focus was rightfully on the old at the Pauley Pavilio in L.A. Speaking of old, we got to see Coyne in the bubble again.

I applaud Townshend for refusing to become one of those lame has-been bands just phoning it in by playing half-assed renditions of their 30-year-old hits (ahem, Rolling Stones).
As we know, Townshend has always been the artist in the band. And Daltrey has always been the lame one -- obsessed with looking cool and not giving a shit about writing good music (or any music, for that matter).
Looks like some things never change.

pearl jam knows how to rock anywhere. i thought sean penn's intro for them was spot on...they have always been vocal about their love for the Who (they crush it on Baba O'Reilly in their live shows), and they have never sold out in the least bit.

I side with Townsend on this one. Sure, the Who haven't been burning up the charts recently but I respect bands who are still trying rather than phoning it in for years. Maybe their last album wasn't that great (judging from the reviews, I never actually listened to it) but at least they're creating a reason to still exist. They're refusing to be a nostalgia act. That's the kind of attitude I can get behind.

I think Pearl Jam always sucked and still do. I must admit, however, that they're covers of "...Reign..." & "...Real Me" were excellent. They always were a cover band writing mediocre, self-absorbed drivel. Truth comes out.

When the impetus for your touring (at least according to the NYP, I know specious at best) is the buckets of profit you stand to make, maintaining your "artistic integrity" by performing new pieces rings hollow to me.

I think I'd be more inclined to agree with Townshend if he or Daltrey had put out a single album of decent new material since the 80s.
Though Daltrey's wrong, too, since he's basically advocating doing what they've been doing for a while now - playing the same 10 or 15 songs that classic rock radio has run into the ground with the odd rarity. I'd be way more interested in a show that was about 20 percent stuff like "Baba O'Riley" and "My Generation" and 80 percent stuff like "Cut My Hair" and "A Quick One."

I was there and no one was really paying attention until Pearl Jam was announced and took over. Perhaps that just LA crowds? Everyone else was cool, and having watched the tv broadcast, sounded better than they did live (incubus was weak live, but is good on the show).

As much as I love Pearl Jam's cover of Reign, I have never heard their cover of Real Me until last night. And I liked that one even better. Stone (or was that Mike? I can't tell them apart anymore) was rocking out like crazy. And Jeff tore up that bassline. Ahh, and the horns! Killed

Incubus wasn't half bad, and I hate Incubus. I think part of my reaction was just relief at them not letting the DJ guy scratch all over "I Can See for Miles". I need to see the MMJ/Vedder "Quick One" performance.

I'm no fan of Incubus but they certainly held their ground with their spot-on I Can See For Miles. The rest of them? Ecch. And shouldn't they not call themselves "The Who" nowadays - I mean how bout just "The Pete And Rog"?

Haven't watched it yet, can't watch it at work, but wondering: Does Incubus guy keep his shirt on? If so, I want to see it. It would trulyl be something I have never seen happen before (I think the other band members would concur).
