The Lost Mac Commercials

This is a good time to ask for computer advice. I need a new laptop. Everyone says to get a Macbook ("you can run Windows on them!") but I'm not convinced. Any suggestions?

the only laptop i've ever had that even came close to a mac is the dell inspiron series. i've bought 14 for my office, and all have real solid. i've got the 17-inch 9200 and have found it to be a great computer. that said. it's no macbook/powerbook. run to the nearest apple store now!

The question really is, what do you currently do with your computer you have today and what would you like to with your new one? If you like to play games on the computer then the Mac isn't that great of system due to lack of many titles. Alhtough World of Worldcraft and Quake 4 are out for the Mac and Call of Duty 2 is coming soon. Although, I did boot into Windows on my MacBook Pro and was able to play a PC only game so there is that. Rebooting into Windows via Boot Camp is actually a bit of drag. There really isn't many things that you can't do on the Mac now. I have co-workers who send me Visio files (PC only) but I have a sweet Mac application called OmniGraffle Pro that lets me open and edit them. If you buy a MacBook thinking you are going to use the Windows side of things you will soon see the Windows partition gather dust. The amount of quality Mac applications available is truly outstanding.
The MacBook is a good computer and has a fast processor, decent hard drive and good graphics card. Plus, you get the Mac OS which is not likely to get viruses or be infected with spyware, a bunch of the Apple software to create movies, edit photos, make music, etc. Sure you can do all of that stuff on the PC with software from a company like Adobe. It comes with it's own web browser called Safari which is MUCH better than Internet Explorer and is generally considered safer to use for banking and online shopping.
Go to the Apple store and take a look at it. Do you like the glossy screen? Does it feel solid to you? Crazy thing is, the cool looking black model costs more.

I made the apple plunge over the last month, so I'm fresh to it, but I'm pretty happy with the decision so far.
This was how I decided. The company I just left used $1800 Dell Latitudes, and we had loads of problems with cheap power supplies / monitors flickering, etc. When it came to shopping, the Macbook, to me, just seemed to be a more durable, better built machine. I found it hard to find another laptop in the ~$1400 range that was as good of quality, hardware-wise.
I also haven't had to reboot my computer in a week, and there's no noticeable slowdown. That's nice.

Macbook it is, or a Pro if you can stretch that far. I love my iMac :) Best decision I've made. And also, it's hardly restrictive, unless you want something other than an iPod.... Sony and Creative appear to have a bit of a software blackhole when it comes to mac support. And f*** Windows! If you run it as the sole operating system you're really missing out lol The black one is a waste though, you pay $150 or something daft for just black plastic instead of white.

I don't play computer games, but I wanna start to do video stuff and Mac is probably best for that. I'm sure I wouldn't run it as a Windows machine often, but it's nice to know it's there so I don't have to repurchase all my PC software from the getgo.

Scott, just be aware that not all software for Macs are Intel ready... Some apps, like Adobe CS2, have to run in emulation until their binary versions are available. Adobe's is coming in 07... I'm not sure how much of a speed hit you take on this, it may be negligible.
If video is your thing, you'll be okay. The production Suite (Final Cut Pro et-al) are in Binary now and from what I hear the iLife stuff is blazing fast.

Qbertplaya's mommy is right, and yet not. The black one is more expensive because it has things like a bigger hard drive, but you can go to the online Apple Store and buy those same specs on a white one and you'd save $150. It is a "black is the new black" cool tax.
Apple's FinalCut Pro is the best video editor out there in my mind. FinalCut Express is a decent app as well. Just starting out, iMovie/iDVD will do, for a bit.
Score = 0
for video, you might want to consider the macbook pro models because they have actual video cards with dedicated video memory (as oppose to the macbooks whose integrated graphics chipset shares memory with the rest of the system). Traditionally integrated graphics means bad news, but the ones on the macbooks are supposedly new and improved, and when i was playing with them at the 5th ave. store, even the lowest macbook was able to play 1080p HD video without dropping a single frame. and yes the black macbooks cost $150 for no reason (the bigger hdd only costs $50), but man, it's oh so sexy.
as for pc's, i got no advice for you, but even if you can find a dell on the cheap, imovie = free. whatever video editing software you can find for pc is likely to cost at least a couple hundy.

"hatever video editing software you can find for pc is likely to cost at least a couple hundy", uh what now? Even ignoring the apps that came with my video card, there are tons of PC video editing programs, even for Linux (which I mention since everyone keeps saying "PC" as if "PC"=="Wintel", that old Mac-fanboy idea of what non-Macs are since they can't imagine that the competition is everything-else instead of some single integrated monopoly like Apple.)
(Yeah, yeah, so I'm not the biggest fan of Macs and iPods; it's not that I think they're bad per se, just that people go REALLY overboard with them, especially since their benefits are mainly just a white-rounded-themed version of what's been on the market for awhile already in other forms.)
Personally I'm unsure what to recommend. I'unno. My friend has a really snazzy Toshiba laptop that came in black without any extra cost ;) Alienware maybe? Nearly everything they make is just damn cool, a bit expensive but mainly because they don't cut corners on the parts (ie. if you bought another laptop that had the actual specs on the inside and outside, just a different company, you'd likely end up paying as much anyways; other companies just hide their costs and paint deceiving pictures).

Though it probably doesn't need to be said much more, I'll chime in too. I just bought a powerbook G4 (yes, right before macbooks were released, sadly) and absolutely love it. I have a windows desktop, and it took me a little while to get used to mac OS. But now that I'm adjusted, I realize just how much easier they are to use.
It's wonderful for video/photo/music things. I absolutely adore not having to worry about viruses. And it's super cute (small and light!) to boot.
I never used to understand why Mac users were always all about Mac. But now that I have one, I totally get it.

To clarify my previous post, Sony offer the mac version of their Mp3 software online, but not on the CD that comes with the player. Creative offer no such mac support, which is a shame as their players are quite cool. What is most annoying is that the current generation iPods and Nanos don't have Firewire support, and surely that's Apple shooting themselves in the foot by neglecting their own Mac customers slightly? I know USB 2 is good, but Apple always used to go on about how superior Firewire is. How hard could it be?!

In my own experience, I've never had a Windows-based PC (95, 98, Millenium, XP, etc.) that did not inexplicably crash for no apparent reason other than Windows is awesomely unstable. I don't download programs loaded with viruses, I have extensive anti-spyware and anti-virus protection, I run it behind a firewall, etc. Windows is a gaping gunshot wound and every year Microsoft comes out with a new bandaid.
Whenever I've used a Mac for any extended period I've never had these issues. The interface is really straighforward and the programs run with minimal issues. It's not that it's perfect, but given the choice I'd go for a Mac any day of the week.

Scott, if you're working with multimedia there's no question that the Mac is the way to go. Drop a few more dollars on the Macbook Pro, and you'll be set for years. Two things that I've always stressed when arguing in favor of Mac is (1) that the old complaint about technology being outdated as soon as you buy it does not apply, and (2) that they're so incredibly easy to use. Just go to the Apple online store and look at the video tutorials of some of the apps, then go check one out at the retail store.
And, yes, the Macbooks do get quite hot, but there are things you can buy to alleviate that.

I would also recommend MacBook Pro over the MacBook if you are going to be doing video. Start with the free software (iMovie, etc.) and then graduate to the production suite which is rather cheap considering that it has revolutionized post production. (Final Cut Pro, etc.) My own Powerbook G4 (last one before MBP was released) is fantastic, no errors or hiccups whatsoever, works perfectly and reliably. I stream music from the powerbook to a couple of Airport Express units, for wireless digital sound in the house. Very cool, extremely simple to set up, and bulletproof. Wireless printing too, all incredibly reliable and easy to set up. OK, I'm a fanboy, and on my 8th or 9th Mac portable, going back many years.
I have never experienced a single moment's need for a PC with Windows, although it's easy to see that someone who wants to play games really should buy a PC. They own that segment.

Office Depot has amazing deals on Toshiba laptops (in-store only-- for the week of July 9th). It's definitely worth checking out because Toshiba laptops are much better than dell's, HP, and Compaq but more affordable than a Sony.
That being said, if you are using this laptop as your prime resource for you website, which generates a taxable income??, any laptop/equipment you purchase for said website is tax-deductible. This includes any music, equipment, furniture, etc... you need to confer with a CPA but if you are going to deduct it on your taxes, I would go with a Mac.*

I've always been a Mac user, even back in the olden days when Macs weren't cool (just try to imagine that!) and I'd seriously recommend waiting a couple of months until the new revision of the MacBook is released. The only Mac I was ever disappointed in was the Rev A of the iBook G4, that machine was just a piece of junk and customer service was a nightmare to deal with.
Rev B usually runs without the kinks of Rev A (see 12" PowerBook), and update cycles usually are only a couple of months apart. So if you can wait a litte longer, wait and get the Rev B of the MacBook. If you want to get a new computer right now, then still get the MacBook ;)

i just got a macbook pro. despite the heat issue, it's pretty good (OS 10.4 has a lot of little things OS 10.3 didn't). but, as much as Mac will trumpet the fact that it can do everything out of the box thanks to iLife, don't believe the hype. among other things iPhoto is really REALLY slow and iWeb requires you pay for a .Mac account.
beware that upgrading the harddrive constitutes a "personalized order" rendering it unreturnable unless it is DOA.
if you have your heart set on mac, you may want to get one of the most recent 15" PowerBooks (Apple sells refurbished ones) and wait till more software comes out specifically geared for the new Intel Mac processor before getting a MacBook. I kind of wish that's what i did.

Every OS/platform has it's pro's and con's. In my opinion, the Apple systems have far fewer con's. I am really getting into photo/movie/music editing and my PowerBook is to blame. It just made it so damned easy! I have since replaced an HP desktop (dual boot with Win XP and Red Hat Linux) with a Mac Mini and my wifes Dell Inspiron laptop with a new MacBook.
